I don't get it


As a consumer, I certainly wouldn't mind spending an extra $.44 a year to give the tomato farmers a better wage.
I can't believe that Publix is willing to take a PR hit over something like this. I feel like as a business they would want to do just the opposite and take advantage of what could be positive publicity by standing up for its suppliers even just a little bit.

44c per family per year would (could) double the tomato pickers wages, according to this documentary, as I recall.
I can't see why Publix are so bone-headed about this issue but it probably needs some movement to start up which has enough money behind it to push a "Our Farm Workers Are Well Paid" or "OFWAWP" seal of approval for supermarkets. Other slogans and acronyms are available.
The problem is who's going to push this?
