Loving Audrey

I was surprised that in the end Laurel and Basels relationship went right back to where it left off with no mention of or resolution to Basels confession that he loved Audrey since the day they met. It was a good plot device as the breaking point to Laurels deception so I found it weird that it wasn't brought up again.

So what does everyone think? Was it just one of those things you say when you're professing your love to someone e.g. 'I knew as soon as I laid eyes on you'? Something that feels true at the time but might not have necessarily been the case when you actually did first meet? Or was Basel truly in love with Audrey despite how she treated him and thought that the death of her sister had just brought out a better side to her, allowing her to love him back?

I would have preferred to have this issue resolved in the film so I could enjoy the happy ending but now I'm left speculating the possibility that Laurel is throwing herself behind a relationship that is actually all about Audrey again, like with the kid she used to babysit.

Old post, but I thought your question was interesting. I actually think it was just something nice Basel thought he would say in the moment. He does actually say, "What? It's a nice thing to say," when Laurel tells him to take that back. In the beginning of the film, he seemed weirded out that 'Audrey' was being nice to him and also that she thought he was asking her out on a date when he just wanted to hang out the night Ron Livingston's character punches him. I would say Basel did fall in love with Laurel and didn't have unresolved feelings for Audrey.

Plus there's that moment when the little kid says "Basel thinks you're much prettier now that u aren't being a biotch", so I think that right there shows the truth of it, he may have thought Audrey was hot when he met her, but then once he met Laurel he realized something was different & he liked her more, even tho he thought she was the same person. Maybe in the end Laurel realized that.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that scene. You're right that does provide a bit more evidence that Basel was into Laurel instead of Audrey.

Also people in love tend to rationalize/romanticize their relationships. "I fell in love with you the moment I met you" is just something nice people say after the fact, but is rarely true in real life.
