Massively disappointed

Ok before I start, please don't bother with the insultive pathetic and demeaning comments, telling me I'm a dumbass or that i should stick to playing Mario or Sonic simply because you are one of the millions who are in love with game and think that because someone has a different view on the game than you, that you are right and are a member of a far superior race of beings. (to put it short, i CBA arguing with people who hide behind a keyboard and hurl insults at other people to make themselves feel like The Hulk) If you've nothing sensible or productive to add, then please don't comment.

I absolutely love games with good stories, I love survival RPG's and some of my all times faves are The Fallout series, Resident Evil 4, Uncharted, Splinter cell, Dead Island, Dying light etc but for some reason, i never played this game and only recently got a copy bought for me as a gift.

I have been playing it now for about 90 minutes or so and i have to ask, does it get any better? Or is this as good as it gets?

I'm finding it a real slog to get through, it's slow paced, almost as slow as Heavy rain which i turned off before the end through sheer boredom. There seems to be very little to do. So far I've sat though countless cut scenes, walked through about 5 dark and empty buildings, walked through a few empty plant covered streets and strangled a coupled of "infected" There has been no real action to speak of, no horror, no puzzles to solve. The computer AI is terrible, everytime i try to walk through a door the AI character seems to stand in the doorway blocking me from moving and the player movement speed is akin to that of a snail, even when sprinting your character is slow, it can take an age to simply get from point A to point B because of how slow moving your avatar is. Surely the highest rated game of all time on IMDB can't be just this?

Is it worth playing on with it or after an hour and a half of playing should I just not bother? I want to play a game where there's things to do, puzzles to solve, fights to be had etc If this game is simply a series of cut scenes an a few walking about moments like the Tell tale game series then it really isn't for me and i can pop my copy of The Witcher 3 in instead. Games are meant to be played after all, If I wanted a slow survival story with not much else to do, I'd rent out a good film.

Any sensible advice is welcome but please, leave the keyboard macho fan worship stuff at home. Thanks.

Well, I have played through this game several times now. It can be slow, but that's part of its charm. You aren't going to be plowing through hordes of zombies all the time. You won't have countless sidequests to take on along the way. It's a linear path, not open world, and there really aren't a lot of puzzles set up like setpieces like you will find in Uncharted.

That said, what you will do is fight some infected, fight some people, or maybe choose not to engage in some battles (the game gives you that option in certain situations). You will scavenge for bullets and supplies to craft what you will need -- health kits, various bombs, and parts for upgrading your equipment. There will be quiet time when getting from point A to point B, where you can enjoy the beautiful detail in the environments and character development (including many optional conversations -- this game is touted for its story and characters for a reason). If you're anything like me, you'll be amazed by the non-scripted encounters with enemies which keep you on your toes.

If none of that appeals to you, then this probably isn't your game. Otherwise, it's worth sticking it out.

Cheers for your honesty mate, I might give it another hours play through or so and see if I can get into it, now that I know what to expect, I may appreciate it a little more. I just expected it to be more engaging and have more things to do, I do like to be kept busy with my games and that's what's disappointed me most with this one, that a majority of it thus far, has just been following AI characters around and watching cut scenes, instead of puzzle solving engaging battles and such. I can see why people are praising the voice work and graphics as they are impressive but if I can't get into it on my next few spare hours, it might be wise to put this one to bed and make a start on The Witcher 3 instead. Thanks again for the info and advice, appreciated. ;-)

No problem. Hey, if it doesn't work out, there's only a few more weeks until Uncharted 4. Been waiting ages for that one myself.

Bit late to the party, but I thought I'd chip in. This game took me, approx 3 attempts to get into it. I'd never give up, but something else would distract me, and I was not involved enough in the game, to keep on with it. Then, after one particular scene (It takes place when you reach your first objective with Tess, and Elle, I got hooked. Well and truly hooked. Played this game a few times now, and it never disappoints. It is one of my favourite games of all time, and it took me a while to get into it! So, if you do ever see this post, let me know how you got on

reply

I've got to say so did I. I really did struggle with it at first and it took me till about 2 weeks after my original post to get any further into it, but like you, I'm glad I did, it turned out to be a really good game, I just wish the beggining few hours wouldn't have been so slow and drawn out. I nearly missed out on a very good gaming experience.

I know that some people do not like critics , and think you should make your own mind up, but, if it had not been for the critics, I would have given up I think. Almost to a man, the critics thought that this was a masterpiece, so, I felt I had to go on. Thank you to the critics I say!

reply

last of us is a story/character driven game. the cut scenes, artifacts, optional convos, and beautiful artwork are what make the game great. there are some good fights, but that is not what this game is about. if you want action packed, puzzle solving stuff, play the Uncharted series.

I started and stopped the game a few times, always in the heart of Boston. Once I stopped at the T station, once when I was in the building with the infected. I couldn't seem to get into the game even though everybody was telling me to push through. I finally gave it another shot, felt the same way all through Boston. Once I got to the State House, I immediately got why everybody loved it. Moving from that area to Bill's town and beyond I was hooked and played it 5 times through since. Every time I have to trudge through the Boston stuff, then the game really takes off and becomes the game everybody says it is.

So yes, keep playing. Once you get into Bill's town you should really start to enjoy the game. The story, the characters, everything really comes to life at that point. Boston is tough and not very fun, no real character development, story is weak, and the game itself is boring
After that, all good.

This guy is echoing my thoughts exactly. And I do mean exactly

I did just that buddy and eventually, I really got into it and saw the game for what it was, just a shame it was so slow and dull for the first few hours.

Glad you pushed through and enjoyed it.

This game is great to me not as much as everyone else but is great, however Uncharted 4 has released and that game is also a masterpiece and has near perfect pacing, that game you will definitely love

But Phanty, you are a dumbass so why would you expect anything less from people?

Go tell it to someone who gives a *beep* you pathetic little troll lol what's that I hear? Oh it's your mum telling her 40 year old loser of a son to come out of his room and take out the garbage. Best wipe off the k/n/o/bcheese from you Penthouse mag and do as your told.

Your aggressive macho keyboard warrior rant aside, I really don't get where you're coming from regarding TLOU. I get that we all have our own opinions and you are expressing yours, as is your right, it just seems odd to me. Video games, like TV and film are an escape from reality and this game lets you escape. TLOU has such an immersive and enriching atmosphere that immediately sucks you into it. I'm not the biggest gamer, so I don't have to acquire every little game that comes out, I just get the games that are truly special and TLOU qualifies as just that.

Enthralling story check/positive
Incredible visualizations check/positive
Great characters/character development check/positive
Stunningly realistic commentary on people check/positive
Sort of confined spaces check/negative (I'd prefer a more open world game)

Well for one thing, my rant isn't a keyboard warrior rant, the prick it's aimed at for some unknown reason, just went through my IMDB account and left a bunch of nasty and downright insulting comments on a bunch of my posts all in the space of half an hour and if you think I'm gonna sit here and let some 40 year old virgin still living at home with his parents put me down when I've said nor done nothing wrong to him, you're sadly mistaken. I don't need to be a keyboard warrior, I'm 6ft 5 and very well built so i despise people being threatening and abusive to me online when they wouldn't dare speak to me like that in person. And being the size that i am, I'm not and never have been a bully, most people who know me in person would tell you what a decent and caring person i am but one thing I can't stand is Trolls and internet bullies which this plank certainly is if you look at some of his IMDB comments. he just enjoys being abusive to people yet i dare bet he wouldn't say boo to anyone's face. As far as my post goes. I did actually revise my original post to say once i had gotten into the game, my viewpoint did change and after the first few hours, I did really enjoy it. But for some reason, my original post hasn't been changed and until last night, I didn't even know it was still live. But yes, i did enjoy the game but had i have not asked people on these boards in the first place, i would have given up on it after the first couple of hours. It just really annoys me that the IMDB is so full of creepy idiots who spend hours and hours each day just looking around for people to put down to make themselves feel big and tough.

Okay, your point is well taken, I didn't realize a poster was (or posters were) doing that to you. Even if I have been able to avoid that level of BS from folks here, I completely understand your point about there being a great deal of douche-baggery on the IMDb boards. It gets old. My ignore list is pretty extensive with these type of posters. I come here to talk about films/tv shows/games which I enjoy, not to hate on those things that I don't like that other people do like, or to get drawn into the BS that you apparently were subjected to just for sharing your own viewpoints. I may not necessarily agree with everyone, but I come in peace and try to act like an adult -- even though sometimes we might be talking about childish things.

To your point about the game. I get that some games/shows/films aren't for everyone. There are some games I don't care for. As a fan of TLOU I'm glad you were able to take a second look at the game and derive some enjoyment from it. The game may not be perfect in all aspects but for me it has its own magic that makes it easy to look past any deficiencies. Yours is a good example of giving games, or whatever the subject might be, a second chance. I will make note of that. Even though there is an abundance of douchebags on these boards, not everyone is as such.

The Last of Us is a disappointment. It most definitely is as it's nowhere near the hype that surrounds it. But I wouldn't say it's a massive disappointment. That title is reserved for Duke Nukem Forever. I've had the game for over a year. Gone into rage like fits over it when playing. Mostly due to the stagnant pacing at times and the controls in combat. Controls that feel like they were designed for a different game altogether. It is a game that has taken a great deal of time and what patience I have left to get to Jackson county I think it's called. In the fall. That's where I've just arrived at today. Most games I play I'd be finished numerous times by now. I've not finished this game once yet.

Ha ha i used to love Duke Nuke em games and was well excited when "Forever" came out but i avoided buying it due to the massive backlash it suffered. I thought I'd wait until it dropped in price but even then, the absolute hate this game has got for almost every aspect of it, has put me off and I've just not bothered with it. Sounds like i made the right choice lol :-)

I mean the rage I got into when playing it was The Last of Us. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. If you gave DNF a miss you really are not missing out on anything. 12 years to create a pile of turd with broken controls.

Game is one of the best ever made. Great acting, characterization and artwork. Many, many, many action scenes against infected, soldiers and gangs. Not one solitary second of boredom. You can use stealth or agrresive attacks or s mix of both. Literally anything can be waiting around the corner unless you sense ahead. Stupendously entertaining.

Days gone looks like it'll be Last of Us with more action. You might like that one. It comes out next year exclusive for the PS4
