Gorgeous nature animation but the character animation was too cartoonish

I don't think I've ever seen animation that got moving water, spider webs, even the sort of mangy front yard so perfectly accurate. But then the characters looked like "Roger Rabbit" laid over top of that realism. Would it have been too expensive to animate them realistically?

It wasn't about "expense." That's the style the director wanted. Like The Good Dinosaur.

Plus, it was mostly with the kids. They're supposed to be whimsical, so that style fits their characters.

Let's be bad guys.

Yes, and they were cute and amusing. But then we could turn it the other way and say the background/nature animation didn't fit. Either way, it was a clash that took me out of the movie somewhat. My son, who loves this movie and got me to watch it, agrees: for him this is the film's only flaw.
