Why not build a lighthouse? (facetious)

What were they thinking? Were they deliberately leading the Bishop gang to them? They had all kinds of lights on; they covered most windows, but not the huge one in the loft; they never turned off any lights once the attack began. They even took a lamp into the root cellar with them.

I know directors and the set and lighting designers think they must provide a logical light source, but please, not at the expense of common sense! These things had me screaming at my screen!

They knew the Bishop boys were coming. That was stated in the beginning of the movie by Hamm. The only thing they didnt know was when.

Maybe so, but standing in that big loft window with all the light behind them was absolutely idiotic AND as was still having all the lights on once the first shot was fired.

I'd like to believe that "real people" in the same or similar situation would have the sense to acclimate their eyes to the dark BEFORE the enemy showed up.

I know what you're saying, but I wanted a reason for there to be more light, because I couldn't see a thing in the big climactic gun fight.🐭

I think they might not want to turn off the lights totally or otherwise it would have been difficult to see people getting near too. But they should have turned off all lights as soon as the attack started.

The last fight in the film was quite ridiculous anyway. They expected the Bishop gang to be coming, and yet they engaged in what appeared to be a casual conversation outside the house where a couple of baddies could have sneaked close and killed both of them easily. Instead one guy fired a single shot as if to warn them, and after they had ducked to relative safety, the baddies began to fire what looked like full volleys from an Eighteenth Century battle.

Then instead of getting close to the house while seeking cover, the baddies advanced at walking pace to the house as a group in full view of the enemy - of course only to fall prey to the dynamite and those nasty jars with nails. Despite the overwhelming superiority in numbers, you won't advance like that - for the obviously reason that no one would want to take the first bullet.
