or maybe "The Quick and the Dead"?

Anyone reading this comment came here because of the movie "Jane Got a Gun". Whether or not you think it is a good movie it seems you are interested in the genre. There is a 1995 movie "The Quick and the Dead" which features Sharon Stone as an old west gunfighter. Also in it are Russell Crowe, Leo DiCaprio, and Gene Hackman. In fact Hackman is great, maybe his best role ever, as the ruthless gunfighter who "owns" the town. So, if you've never heard of this movie, or heard of it but never took the time to watch it, then give it a try. I own the DVD and re-watch it every few years, it is a guilty pleasure.

The Quick and the Dead is an amazingly awesome movie. It's certainly not a "traditional" or faithful western, rather a hyper-stylistic homage to Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns through the lens of Sam Raimi's modern style.

I'm aware a good few people dislike it, but to me if you know what to expect and/or am a Raimi (Evil Dead, Darkman) fan it is an absolute blast. Some of the stylistic touches in the cinematography is just brilliant.

Natalie's character wishes she was as cool as Sharon Stone, who plays Clint Eastwood wonderfully. Leo is great fun as an arrogant young wannabe. And yes, Hackman is brilliant, in perhaps my favorite role he's ever done, as a guy who'd make Little Bill wet himself with fear!

I should add that Keith David, Lance Henrickson, Tobin Bell, Pat Hingle and friggin Sven Olaf Thorson also all appear in the film, which features a colourful array of gunfighters that feel like a badass roster from a crazy fighting game than a standard western cast.

'Banjo' it is always good to read the perspective of others who realize how good a movie this is ('Quick/Dead'). You state it well.

Agreed! Always loved The Quick and The Dead.

To me, it's sort of like a Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat if you were to turn it into a gunslinging competition set in the Wild West. Colorful, unrealistic yet fun characters; over the top scenario yet never ridiculous--just plain fun and entertaining, really. Also, give the movie credit: it starred a female lead back in 1995 as a hero, of sorts.

Part of me wishes they had taken this movie and made it resemble The Quick and the Dead, but with Natalie more of a gunslinging she-bitch. Would have been a good flick, and probably a bit more memorable than this, not that this was bad ... just generic.
