Westerns are Dead

Not going to watch this one and Tarantio has also lost With Hateful Eight.

Every now and the a good one comes along, unforgiving, tombstone or young guns.. But it's certainly not a big draw at the moment...

However I believe that after production nightmares and smell production company bought this as a finished product ( it's been circling the sh*#ter for a few years)

Now if that was my money I'd try to jump on the Tarantino cash cow, other wise it'd end up straight to DVD.

Not the only movie to do so as there is another one called Tomahawk something...

I like all the cast in this movie, hope it's at least a 7/10, and if hateful 8 and Tomahawk do well, it could be the 2016 western renaissance, stranger things have happened

reply

Oh yeah bone tomahawk. It was ok, probably better then this.

Maybe, but there may be a long, slow death in progress for the Western, and with all the Westerns post Django, The Lone Ranger, A Million Ways, The Homesman, Slow West, Bone Tomahawk, The Hateful Eight, The Revenant (Is The Revenant really poised to make good money? It doesn't look it to me.), and Jane Got a Gun, either failed or performing weakly, there may be an increase in the chill factor.

That's why I think this recent series of attempts at the Western may be a do-or-die, last ditch gamble, whether the gamblers know it or not.

And Forsaken (2016)?

reply

Didn't know about it.

Here's a review of a Toronto FF screening: http://variety.com/2015/film/festivals/forsaken-review-kiefer-donald-sutherland-toronto-film-festival-1201594684/

My personal guess is that it may be a good movie, and please Western fans, as the review predicts, but I don't see it breaking out of the Western's handicap at the box office.
It does not appear to have any overseas distributors. However, the US distributor has a respectable track record.

Modest money at best.

Don´t forget Far Bright Star, Joaquin Phoenix´s upcoming movie.

Ornithologist, Philatelist, Philantropist.

reply

It's a very indie Casey Affleck directed historical film, set in 1915, or thereabouts. It could make a profit with judicious budgeting.

I wish them luck, but I don't think it will reverse the Western's B.O. handicap.

You must be eating a lot of crow now that The Hateful Eight and Revenant have done well.

Making A Living Seeing

reply

Is Revenant a western? Its not listed western category in imdb, but drama adventure thriller and its main theme is survival/revenge/grieving/soul theme.

When i think western i think cowboys and cowboy hats.

reply

The Revenant, like Jeremiah Johnson, is definitely a western because it's setting is the American Western Frontier. Even a film like "Last of the Mohicans" is a western because in its time period, the mid 18th century, what is now Western New England, was then the Western American Frontier.

reply

A lot of folks still like Westerns but this one bordered on pitiful pitifulness.

The movie you are most likely talking about is "Bone Tomahawk (2015)" and is quite good. It has a rating of 7.1 but went straight to DVD in the U.S. for some reason.

You can join a long list of premature "death of the Western" prognosticators that dates back to to the 1960s.

Yet, here we are.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

reply

in the 60s, there were many westerns and Gunsmoke was a top 10 tv show, only one to do so in 3 diff't decades -- compare to NOW - 75% of the tv shows a dumb cop shows, even reality cop shows dominate.. westerns are hard to find, and the qualits has diminished -- no story necessary now, they are all just revenge flicks like all new Liam Neeson films.. they may make money, but so does just about everything that they market on tv w big ad campaings, just look that the top 100 grossing films, - nearly all are mkt'd to teens, most are CGI films, like 15 Marvel films, 7 Star Wars films, etc.. didn't see any westerns there however, not as big as they once were for sure.. the best are usually remakes like True Grit.. Unforgiven was good, also Open Range, Broken Trails & Lonesome Dove, both for tv -- there are a few (The Claim, The Proposition) worth seeking out

My only regret in life is that I'm not someone else - Woody Allen

reply

You are just another in the long list of people who've made that claim over the past decades.

reply

Westerns have seen better days but I wouldn't say that the genre is totally dead. If a good to excellent western is made I think it can still find an audience.

Interesting statement, because one big problem, and maybe the big problem for the Western, is that in the movie business, the powers-that-be want to find the audience before committing to make the product, not after. And it seems like the studios and production companies don't have marketing data indicating that there is sufficient demand for a Western.

Western's aren't dead but it isn't a very popular genre. Very rarely are Western's blockbusters and they are never as big as sci fi and fantasy films.

reply

Agree, not a popular Genre. I've been growing to like it more lately than I did 10-15 years ago. The big thing is there isn't much of an audience for Westerns now. For the most part the idea is played out. And revamps like Wild wild west where terribly done. It's kinda like Horror has to find it's demographic in order to survive. It's done ok lately, but it's never been more the a mediocre genre. They don't know how to create suspense, and likeable characters in horror that makes you want to see the films in theaters.

reply

WTF? There are 3 westerns playing right now and one is a favorite for Oscar gold.

or have you not been paying attention?

Are you for real?

Everyone loves a good western and everyone hates Adam Sandler. Those are the 2 staples of the film industry.

Now go take a timeout.

reply

While that's mostly true, I think the lesser fortunes of Westerns at the BO have to do more with the audience, and Westerns appeal primarily to a male North American demographic. With foreign sales accounting for so much of big films' revenues, it's a dangerous bet.

Note that Django, a film with bigger names and more cross-over appeal than Hateful Eight had huge success.

This is the most INSANE thread title that I have the misfortune of seeing and I have seen and read a lot of 'em. Some people just never seem to cease to amaze. LOL....
