Wait I missed something what's the deal with the rubber bands on wrists?

I was kinda zoning in and out at the beginning. I remember seeing them put on the rubber bands but I don't remember why. And then at the end the girl takes hers off, gets hit by the electric burst, and uses that to kill the bad guy
