great film

Just well done...

But I'm so confused....Mr. Will sat in the chair as if he was taking over....

But who impregnated Rachel? Is it even important? I guess overall it's not...

So many questions...

I have the same exact questions re: Mr. Will and who the father was. Anyone care to tell their opinion?

reply

Hmmm...wait a minute. Mr. Will sat in the chair like he was taking over? I didn't catch on to that. If that's so, then that means that the father was the one who impregnated Rachel, and that's why Mr. Will has been accepted back to the community and the other guy is nowhere to be found. It also explains why the father is so quick to dismiss Rachel's "immaculate conception" and marry her off to someone else. How subversive.

I guess that's the only way to read the ending of the movie, other than she really was impregnated by the blue tape of her biological father singing (which would technically be incest...eww).

reply

yep, that's how understood the film too.. the mormon father was exposed of impregnating Rachel and thus kicked out, making Mr. Will the new head of the family.

plus, there was the scene when Clyde asked Mr. Will if her father (the mormon one) has had sex with her, and Mr. Will got awkward... maybe he knew something.

but yes, really loved this film too!

That and the way Mr. Will slams the door into the "father" when he was trying to get her to come back to the wedding. If he didn't know anything about it before, then he definitely caught on to it at some point.

I'll still be here tomorrow to high-five you yesterday, my friend. Peace.

Yes it all makes sense now. Billy Zane,(Rachel's community father) took advantage of her naivete and was sleeping with her and I think that Rachel was so naive that she believed she was impregnated immaculately. Those kids were so sheltered that they really had no clue about the birds and the bees. Rachel did a great job of pulling this role off. The ending where she was in the church about to be married off and she's asking God to have her make believe husband Claude or Clyde come and steal her away or save her from this marriage. I think you guys all hit the nail on the head when you said Mr Will had taken over the role as head of the family. Rachel said there was a confession on the tape and she said she needs to start at the beginning. There may have been more on the tape than we were privy to hear. Rachel may have exposed her Dad and we were just led to use our imagination as to what she said, but she probably did spill the beans. I think Will knew all along and is the reason he slammed his father with the car door.

If by "the other guy" you mean the father-ish figure played by Billy Zane, didn't we see him in bed with a head wound being tended to by the mother when Mr. Will returned home?

It did appear that Mr. Will was taking on the mantle of leadership by sitting at that desk, but I did not get the sense that the previous "prophet" (did they call him that, or am I transposing too much of Big Love onto this?) had been exiled, only seriously injured and/or dying.

Of course the likelihood that getting hit by a car door would cause such a serious injury is pretty slim...

...but so is chance that the first red Mustang you see in Las Vegas also belongs to your biological father.

(Which also begs the question, how did she even know that car was a Mustang and connect it immediately to her mom's story? Did they prohibit music but encourage reading of Auto Trader?)

I'm not going to keep going down that path, because stuff like that aside it was a neat little movie, and I'll keep an eye out for the lead actress and the director.

I took Mr Will's demeanor at that moment as a brief moment of secret defiance and a commitment to himself to be strong. Now that you mention the head wound I can see it the other way.

And a head wound like that certainly can kill you. (Really, more accurately a brain injury.) You don't have to be cut to die of a blow to the head. Think of shaken baby syndrome or actress Natasha Richardson (Liam Neesom's wife) died after a seemingly minor fall while skiing. The damage occurs when the brain is thrown inside the skull even when there is no crack in the skull and no visible head wound.

Mr. Will sat at that desk because he was vindicated by the tape and his father (Rachel's step-father) was implicated. He was not going to die of the head injury, he was about to face the wrath of his wife (and likely community).

He sat at the desk because he was the one who was staying. It's also why he told Rachel's dad to stop the car. The scene where the camera hovered on the empty chair before Mr. Will sat down cemented it for me...it was the step-father. That's how I see it.

Thank you!! Out of all the things I had to overlook to enjoy this movie, that one bugged me the most. Her mother told her it was a horse, and yet she recognizes the very first one she sees?

reply

@ tpupkin regarding the Mustang question, I can only guess that she knew to follow that lady is because of the (in Rachel's eyes) " infamous telephone song" playing from that car, but yes, I agree with everyone else. Great movie.

That car showed up repeatedly, it was (spoken in a John Belushi voice) "a sign from God."

The movie made it clear enough that it must have been the Billy Zane character which is why it would have felt weird to actually hear her say it on the tape, it would have been redundant. Mr. Will has heard the confession and hits the dude with a car door and then goes back to make sure the rest of the people know. The scene at the beginning has enough info in it to conclude it was the leader who was the father once we find out she was pregnant. She doesn't want mr. will in there. WHen the stepfather asks about honoring her mother and father her response "you should know better than anyone" is terribly creepy after we find out she is pregnant. He should know better than anyone that she does what her parents say no matter what. He talks about the tapes being important which they may be as legal protection for a possible future that the stepfather fears. Like: Just for posterity, you are still chaste, right? Let's make sure your testimony is on tape...
