Applying nowaday women to early 1960's female values?

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

There was a character that wanted Dr. Masters help to cure impotence, but Masters said that he had to have a woman first. The guy said he could not get women because he was impotent. This did not make sense to me , since back in the early 60's , virginity values for females was perhaps the most important virtue and many , if not most women waited until marriage to have sex. My point? The character would have no problem getting a girlfriend , while being impotent and remaining celibate.

Are you sure about this? From the research I've seen and general insight of people that lived through that age - pre-marital sex was becoming increasingly common from the 1940s onwards. Most young people got up to some frisky stuff - they just didn't talk about it as openly as we do today.

In the 50s, only 50% were virgins on their wedding night if they married by 20, and about 25% if they married at a later age. I would expect that the % would be even lower by the 60s after the Pill. The virginal bride image has been a myth for a LONG time...
