!@$#!!! I cried....

Betty went though watching the love of her life being disowned by her parents and then she dies giving birth. To top it all of, here comes the parents to swoop in and take the grandchild their disowned daughter gave birth to. They didn't even look sad at the loss. Arrogant, shameless, selfish sacks of crap! And yes, I understand things were different back then, but it doesn't make me any less mad! By the way, not a fan of Sarah Silverman(sp?) but she did excellent in this episode.

So sad!!

And Why couldn't Betty have happiness for once

I'm sorry but it's such a hackneyed cliche out of the soap opera plots box: lesbian couple wants to have a baby together so the one that can get pregnant does so by artificial insemination, mom has the baby then dies tragically and the evil, homophobic parents of the dead mother come in to seize the baby, and the surviving lesbian gets locked out of the baby's life forever. Bah! So irritated they fell back on that trite cliche.

As for Sarah Silverman, I can't look at her without hearing her on the stage of the DNC this summer, telling Bernie Sanders supporters they're "being ridiculous" for not wanting to hop right up on the Hillary Clinton bandwagon. Way to unite people, Sarah...insult them! And FTR Sarah, you are ridiculous! Stick to comedy. You're way in over your head trying to be a serious actress.

I've never been much of a fan, but I do want to see "I Smile Back." I've heard good things about it, and her performance in it.
So sad for Betty. Maybe Helen wrote a will the night her parents left giving Betty full custody of the baby. I can wish until next week.

"Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!"

reply

No way. Betty is shut out of the baby's life forever. That's the way this cliche plot always plays out.

Also, custody can't be decided by a will. Without legal papers drawn up by Helen, leaving Betty as the baby's legal guardian, custody of the baby must be decided by a court. Parents or siblings of the birth parent/s have priority standing in family court. With Helen's parents being there and being fit to take custody, the court will almost certainly award custody to them.

While we're on the subject, why were Helen's parents there at the end of the episode? I thought the parents lived in another state. It looked like it was later in the same day. How would they have gotten there so fast?

reply

I was wondering that too. Hey, what about the baby's biological father, Dr. Austin Langham? He and Betty could be legally married, get custody of the baby, then divorce leaving Betty full custody. Like I said, I can always wish for a happy ending for Betty. She had a tough life, and it's not exactly rosy right now.

"Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!"

reply

They did this to show how a lesbian in the 1960's and 70's would obtain parental rights to a child. She will likely end up calling Austin and they will raise the child in some fashion. She will have a happy ending with the child. Jesus don't be so negative!

reply

You're right, it was really not cool of her to call Bernie's supporters like that, it was terrible of her indeed :(

reply

I was really PO'd by that! Who is she to call anyone ridiculous?? I find it ridiculous seeing Sarah Silverman in a serious, dramatic role (so glad she got killed off!). I don't find it a winning strategy to insult people you want to bring over to your side.

reply

I got the sense she was going to die all episode.

reply

Oh, I know! They were telegraphing it all episode. Could they be any more subtle. LOL

I agree. It was so obvious what was going to happen that I wasn't sad at all, just a little annoyed. It would have been nice to see something original.

reply

Teddy Sears (Dr. Austin Langham) is credited for 2 episodes for this season so maybe Betty is going to get him to try to get custody of the kid.

I watched an encore. Betty called them when Helen was in the hospital, before the surgery.

"Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!"

reply

I don't disagree about the ending being "telegraphed" or even "cliche." However, if one studies screenwriting it's of often said that there are only (I think it was) eight original stories. Everything else is either a retelling of one of those or an admixture.

So I'm not telling anyone here how to feel or think of they're right or wrong. But for me A STORY IS ABOUT THE UNFOLDING. {btw: that's why I can read spoilers all day long and still enjoy a story/film, well, maybe not a "mystery.") AND I FELT THIS STORY (EPISODE) UNFOLDED BEAUTIFULLY. I'm not a fan of Sarah Silverman either, but in all I was emotionally touched. I seriously gave this episode a 10, and so far this Season a Nine.

I couldn't agree more.

The plot was admittedly felt tired, but I cried too! I think credit should go to Silverman and Ashford, who both really sold the scenes.
Helen was kind of annoying earlier on, but this season her character was better. I broke when she said she wanted her mom.

reply

MdmBadenov is exactly right. That storyline was complete over-the-top propaganda. Helen's parents weren't even sad that their daughter had died, because they were evil, evil close-minded homophobes. That is how everyone is, so we must educate them through clichéd entertainment storylines.

Betty never showed any signs of being a lesbian in the early seasons. She was a prostitute and was married to a man for a period of time. They just "switched" her as a way to squeeze in a cheap tearjerker everybody-hates-gays plot.

The scene where she lectures Barton about accepting his homosexuality because she had struggled with it her whole life was also totally over the top. Same with the scenes in Season One where it implies that Dale is deeply in love with Barton, and wants to marry him and adopt 10 kids. Gay male relationships rarely work that way, especially ones involving a prostitute and client.
