Might be a minor detail, but stood out to me

When the one kid talked about giving the other $50 and pulled out the bill... why was was it a US $ bill and not Canadian? This was a Canadian movie with kids with Canadian accents... even used the word "gitch" (Canadian term for underwear).

Why did the filmmakers feel the need to play down the fact that they were Canadian?

~I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong~

because the kids are probably imagined being american soldiers. like the vietnam war or smth. when you think of canada, you usually don't think war.

That's funny...
I didn't even know it was a Canadian movie... but, for the first few minutes, it totally felt like it was Canadian.. it had a "The Yard" vibe (Which I loved also) I was convinced, until the kid pulled out the US $50 - it didn't feel right to me.
But then I heard the 'explanation' about the kid's imagining they were in a US war.. or that the States are synonymous with war... and I decided to except that as am excuse/reason.

I loved it.. and am glad I found out that it was Canadian... cause it feels so Canadian.

If life gives you MELONS, then you probably have DYSLEXIA.

On the other hand, when PK paid off Kevin with three dollars, he uses coins to do it. That's Canadian.

If you listen to the DVD commentary, they talk about the American fifty dollar bill. They mention that an American fifty is VERY recognisable in many countries (including Canada), as opposed to a Canadian fifty which is not as well known (and doesn't look as nice, acording to the director).
The word "gitch" was also mentioned. Acording to the director, they tried to think of a different word to use. (They wondered if any kids said gitch anymore) For a lack of a "better" word, gitch stayed in the movie. As an American, I had never heard the word used before.
The movie itself, although it was filmed in Canada, does not really specify a country or location. References to general Patton would suggest the kids were American but again it is not specific.
Many movies are filmed in Canada but are supposed to take place in the US, so it would not be unusual for this to be about American kids. I think the movie was meant to relate to both countries and the money was recognizable to both countries as well.
