Through the Hollywood grapevine, everyone knows that Ethan was a horrid choice to play Chet and to use a newbie director and writer... oi vey. This is an unauthorized biopic and it's sad to see people trampling on the jazz legend's legacy. With all the inflated egos making this film, maybe they can blow enough hot air up the distributors asses to make it a success. Good luck cuz y'all need it.
I'm a huge Chet fan and it upsets me that such a poor choice was used to play him. Also, it's a fictional account of Chet's life...why would you do that? Why isn't it authorized through the estate and use Chet's real music? Just like the unauthorized Hendrix film with Andre 3000, it's a disaster. Authorized films are always better. Ethan is THE absolute worst choice to play the legendary jazz trumpeter. It's so sad when wannabe neophyte director/writer;s think they know what the ideal way to leave a legacy is... it's horrendously irresponsible and Chet deserves much better than this attempt. As for being mad, grow up child. These forums are for adults with real opinions. Hey ethan, was your ego stroked, fluffed, satisfied properly enough by robert?
I agree Hawke not a great choice for Chet Baker but this is like getting upset about Don Cheadle playing Miles. It doesn't matter. Don't be so possessive over what you love.
The problem with authorized films IS that they are authorized. The writer and director should have full control over the film, not people close to the subject of it (and not the producers, either, but whatever).
As for Chet's real music, do you mean that his songs aren't in here, or that they aren't being played by him?
How could Ethan possibly be "THE absolute worst choice" for anything? I guarantee I can find a worse one pretty quick.
"Authorized films are always better." Not necessarily. There has been a Queen or Freddie Mercury biopic in the works for years, but they just keep treading water. In part, it is because the remaining band members (Brian May, Roger Taylor) have wanted a safe, family-friendly, watered-down version of events, while the previous choice to play Freddie Mercury (Sacha Baron Cohen) had wanted a more gritty, real-life portrayal of the singer, who was just as legendary for his off-stage parties and sexual excesses as he was as a performer. Unauthorized might incorporate some fiction, but authorized can be equally notorious for only telling the part of the story they want people to know.
Lemme see ... I've watched (in last couple months) biopic of Hendrix , Nina Simone, Miles Davis , NWA , Brian Wilson, James Brown, Hank Williams and now this. This one is easily in the top 3.
What do you have against Ethan Hawke? Your other points may be valid, but EH seems like a good choice for Chet. I don't know a lot about Mr. Baker, but it's not like they chose Forest Whitaker, haha. And his name-power can take an obscure project and get it made and seen. I like Mr. Hawke quite a bit, but I haven't seen this movie.
I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.
The motivations that lead you to dislike the movie are stupid. I'm also a HUGE fan of Chet, knowing all his history and I think that Hawke is a terrific actor, who from the first moment I tought that it would made justice for the character.
It seems like you have an hidden reason to not like this. Cuyaba, Brazil.
I saw this movie myself in Manhattan today; I thought it was a well done and engaging film. It was respectful of Chet Baker, and Ethan Hawke played him with conviction, grace and humility. I think he was an outstanding and inspired choice for the role.
I don't know what the OP's problem is, but you may be right; a hidden agenda of some sort.
Not a very good argument, Amadeus is a great film despite the fact that is not an accurate biopic of Mozart (it is rather a drama that takes place within the context of Mozart life and work).
Newbie director and writer? Even Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder were newbies at one point. Therefore, you've given a stupid reason. And who cares if something is authorized or not? Nobody. There are plenty of unauthorized films that are amazing and plenty of authorized ones that completely suck.
86% on RT. Here's what the RT consensus was on Ethan: "Ethan Hawke lights up the screen as jazz legend Chet Baker, whose tumultuous life is thrillingly reimagined with wit, verve, and style to burn."
My brother who is a big, maybe huge fan maybe a bigger fan than you of Chet Baker suggested the film to us. My husband who didn't know who Chet Baker was is now a new fan. And sometimes a movie that can generate new fans to the genre is a success, a hit. Now we are checking out his work with Gerry Mulligan. Since my brother has been into jazz since the 50's when he was a teenager, even playing it, I'm so glad I listened to him.
Looking less like a dove and more like a hawk with every passing year, this actor goes 15 rounds and then jumps into a Chinatown bender halfway thru "Maggie's Plan". In ChinaTown. ReeRoo. Never happen, but maybe the independent spirits nominate Hawke and Cheadle for the letter e at the end of their names.
