They're kidding, right?

WTF? Making a tv series out of this? It worked fine as a movie, but to remake it into a series?

Definitely the Hollywood machine has run out of ideas when they can't even come up with an original series idea.

reply

It's not an actual television series - it is just a miniseries...

reply

I feel much better about this knowing it's a miniseries. Seems like a decent cast too.

reply

This is still completely unnecessary. Just watch the 1978 version. Plus, this movie was already remade in the 90s - see "Donor" with Melissa Gilbert.

What's a knockout like you doing in a computer-generated gin joint like this?

reply

Oooh...I liked Donor. That one was really pretty good.

Yeah, I'm not very big on remakes myself...especially when the original was so good, but I'll give this a shot.

And then rip it to shreds if it turns out to suck. *grin*

reply

Is it really a big deal? Not everyone has seen the older versions. I'm sure this mini serious is pretty awesome since Ridley and Tony Scott are behind it.

reply

I'd never even heard of the older version until I heard about this remake, and because of the remake I'm going to watch the original. Besides it's not like it's a remake of a classic movie.

reply

How about you go watch the 1978 version and let other people do what they want.

reply

Makes sense - the mini-series format lends itself better (over films) to the adaptation of novels, so I don't get all the griping...

I'll pass judgment on this until and when I actually see the finished product.

Peace,

PG.

"the mini-series format lends itself better (over films) to the adaptation of novels"

After all, how many mini-series can you name that are better than such novels-into-films as JAWS, GONE WITH THE WIND, SHANE, THE GODFATHER, THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and DOUBLE INDEMNITY?

I can't think of one.

Hold on. That's not true. I actually can think of one: LONESOME DOVE.

And if DOVE isn't truly "better" than the movies I just mentioned, it is at least as good, so perhaps I stand corrected.

Still, overall, the best movies tend to turn out better, and resonate more, than do the best mini-series.

Lonesome Dove, Winds of War, War and Remembrance.

it says it is a 2 night miniseries, but when you look at the names of the actors it says 4 episodes next to their names...

so will it be a series at some point later after the showing of the 2 night miniseries?

reply

@libby2130,

I noticed that too. I think the series may have been written as 4 1-hour episodes, but will be shown as 2 2-hour movies instead.

reply

"The Stand" was pretty outstanding (no pun intended). True to the book, well-written and well-acted (except for Molly Ringwald. Wtf were they thinking?).

You saw Dingleberries?

reply

covenant12, thanks a lot for this!!

on topic.. coma, predictable.. nice concept, rushed result..

reply

You're welcome. I agree on COMA. Disappointing in many respects.

As for the original post I was replying to, I do agree with this somewhat

Still, overall, the best movies tend to turn out better, and resonate more, than do the best mini-series.

but that has less to do with film being a superior storytelling medium, and more to do with all the other factors when dealing with a TV miniseries, such as budget, talent of the writer/director/cast, TV-centric restrictions on content and format (writing with commercial breaks in mind) etc.

I think if you took talented film directors and gave them a significantly budgeted miniseries and the free reign (content-wise) of a premium cable channel like HBO or SHO, and a large degree of creative control, then the product could very well be much more engrossing and satisfying than a movie version. Obviously JAWS wouldn't be suited for the miniseries treatment, but imagine if Coppola had made THE GODFATHER as a 6-part miniseries on HBO... As perfect a movie as it is, I can't help but think it would be all the better with more time to bring aspects of the novel to life.

But of the minis I listed, there were several that were also made into films, and I don't think that the film versions, as good as they were, matched the minis.

You forgot Centennial, :)

Not so much forgot it as haven't seen it yet, but it looks right up my alley

You saw Dingleberries?

reply

Well, "Roots" wasn't a novel, but it was a book, and it made a pretty damn good miniseries.

reply

must. watch. original.

reply

Then don't watch it. They're not giving money away if you watch or anything. I've seen the original and it's solid. And yes I did see the remake of Andromeda Strain it was almost good and then ended up sucking but I'll still give this a try.

This looks really stupid. Typical political correction nonsense and cgi crapola. Ho hum.
Anyway, the original was great.

reply

Really? "The original was great."?? How stupid are you? Just wondering because the first film was one of the worst procedural, medical-themed films ever made; i wanted to gouge my eyes out after watching that crap. Plus, this looks 100x better than that and MANY other medical-related shows/movies, especially considering this is produced by Ridley and Tony Scott (Rest in Peace, Tony).

"I will rip out your eyes and skull-*beep* you in your sleep!"

reply

Disagree about the original -- a tremendous suspense film with a lot of tension and a wonderful lead performance by Genieveve Bujold as well as a terrific ending.

And let's face it, the Scott Brothers have produced and directed both good projects and bad ones.

But you're right, what happened to Tony is indeed very tragic. RIP.

reply

And don't forget original COMA's Soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith, it is the single most effective Horror Movie Soundtrack ever made.
Remember when our heroine, after being on vacation approaches and visits the Jefferson Institute for the first time? The way that building dominates in those shots and the music and later the cold friendliness of that nurse (her eyelashes never move)? The original is juster mastery in every single shot!

reply

The 1978 version was superior in every way.

The original was far, far superior to this. I found this one very boring.

reply

It's not a remake if it was originally based on a novel. How many filmed/TV versions of Romeo and Juliet are there?
