Yes, at the end Nicolas takes the position of Julian.

Yeah, I didn't care for the final 15 min. There is really no progression in the story. I was a little disappointed in the movie.
shareThe crook, Esteban, deserved a trial. Not the summary justice of a police officer intent on revenge. Julian had nothing to lose he was dying anyway but he wanted to save Esteban in every possible way. One can but imagine that Esteban was a surrogate son or represented someone in Julian's past.
