Better Than Spring Breakers, Coppola Outdoes Korine

This movie was not a game-changer by any means, but vastly underrated by most critics, and far superior than anything Harmony Korine or Larry Clark have done since Gummo, and Bully.

Agree? Lets discuss

I just liked it because of the fashion, and I wouldn't compare it to spring breakers coz that movie was way to horrible to compare it to anything but I still see your point :)

reply

I think its weird to compare the two they are very different films especially style wise.

reply

Coppola is far better. Harmony Korine is a joke.

reply

Better than Spring Breakers, both still sucked :/

reply

Spring breakers was MUCH better. And I wasn't that crazy about it.

You. Can't. Compare. Them.

Sorry but you seriously can't. The style is so different. This was a dark comedy and Spring Breakers was an artsy crime drama. So just...no.

Also known as Derek.

Please, they're both artsy crime dramas..

Well, it's like my grandpa always used to say: if you have to watch a two-hour movie about attractive but very vapid and annoying people, it's much better at least if they're in skimpy bikinis (or naked). So I'd pick "Spring Breakers".

Also, James Franco can act circles around Emma Watson et. al.

Sofia Coppola has made much better films than Harmony Corrine or LarryClark--but those films are "Virgin Suicides" and "Lost in Translation", not this.

Yes. You. Can.

Crime drama? Whaaaaaat? It's a dark satire. And people say it has no point, and the character are empty, the film offers no real insight into who they really are (how can that be a drama?)--which is how I hear others describe this film and its characters. The comparisons are there, if you didn't realize Spring Breakers is also a comedy/satire (how did the piano scene with the Britney Spears song not make that obvious to you?) then that is why you don't realize the similarities. They are both dark, satirical social commentaries.

I think the 2 films are an interesting comparison.

They both deal with unexplained (unexplainable?) self-destructive behaviour by teens.

Spring Breakers is so much more extreme in a couple of ways, that I wouldn't be surprised if many people found it a more interesting experience than TBR.

SB is also pretty disconnected from reality. I sum it up this way:
4 friends go on a holiday but 2 of them happen to be psychopaths and go crazy.

I don't think it effectively says much more than that.

TBR, on the other hand, depicts actual events in a plausible way. I think it's an interesting and valuable exercise to think about WHY those kids did what they did. Are they completely abnormal? Or are they pretty representative of their generation? Are they bad people? Do they deserve to be in prison?

________

Scarlett Johansson is Miss Peel, Clark Gregg is John Steed, but who the heck are the others?!

reply

Nah, Spring Breakers was clearly better. SB held a mirror up to this type of hedonism by applying it to its extreme yet logical end. TBR is thematically similar in its exploration of these vapid, narcissistic teens, but was less effective. Whereas SB inundates the senses with its imagery & Skrillex etc., TBR simply documents this simple story, which is all too-repetitive (visually not very interesting, pointless long shots etc.). Also, although Watson and Julien are quite good, and are probably equal to Franco's co-stars in SB, Franco clearly has the better performance. TBR is not Coppola's best by any means, but it's decent.

The Bling Ring: 7.5/10
Spring Breakers: 8.5/10

Is this your homework, Larry?

Completely different types of movies. I didn't particulary care for either of them, but for different reasons.
What really bothers me about this movie was that it seemed like a lazy throw away. Coppola usually makes movies that, to me, are very engaging and compelling no matter what is happening. They are usually well written, very nuanced, stylistically, atmospherically, and visually beautiful.
To me this movie had none of that, and left me not caring about it and just waiting for it to be over.

Spring Breakers is pure art and poetry. This is just plain and boring.

But, thanks, I will watch Spring Breakers again, because it is one of my favorite movies of all time.
