Seriously when are they going to quit with that sh!t, You don't wear those things just for the hell of it, but every singly time there are Nazi's they are wearing those damn masks!

i assumed that rubber gas masks were just a good deal cheaper than zombie make up.

The Nazis were wearing gas masks to hide the disease on their faces. There is a convesation in the movie about it.

A lot of movies use it because the old style masks are just creepy. Even the new version of "Dr. Who" used it in their WW2 story.

Also, in the case of this movie it makes the reveal when some of them pull them off and we see their messed up faces all the more surprising than if they just showed up without them.
