Valuers

They just keep cutting costs on what is already poor production value shows anyway.

The typical valuation on these show.

Well its a clock, its round in shape, and Blue in colour taking all that into consideration therefore its worth $20,000.

Yeah.... i am only in Series 1 and already they have the buyers valuing their own pieces and in 1 episode some random Scottish Farmer valuing a piece of farm equipment he had never seen before!!

Not sure which is worse, that, or when they're adding up prices on something like the Storage Wars (comes via History channel cable here).

.. Something might've cost a certain amount when new and it can hold some value as second-hand; but, it's like Rick says, sometimes, on Pawn Stars - is the value what the seller is asking for, or for how much it's getting sold (what ppl end up paying)

&& it's funny how they count it as 'money made', money in their pocket, when there's the whole issue of actually selling it still ahead.

Yeah,it used to make me wince when they added up those "values". Just because something might be worth $xxx doesn't mean you'll sell it for $xxx.

As for Pawn Stars,...something most people don't realize...the shop is the biggest pawn shop in Las Vegas,a major tourist city. As such, many items they can price ABOVE their "current value" and get it. This especially holds true on rare "hot" items that are popular. This is how values go up. If you try to sell a $100 item in a small shop in a small town, you might get $25,but the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas can sell the same item for up to $125 if it's a "popular" item. This is why the guys on the show, many times, offer close to the "experts" appraisal on some items, because they know they can sell them for more than the current "value".

Back to Baggage Battles, the stars here know people that can sell their goods for decent prices. They do research after buying the items and before the episode is aired,so they can evaluate them with pretty good accuracy. In fact, many of the items are probably sold before they "say" the value on the show,...ahhh the magic of editing.

The one thing that really irks me on all the shows(this one,Pawn Stars,Storage Wars,Container Wars,etc...) is how some appraisers offer to buy the items. NEVER sell an item to an appraiser. It's highly unethical for an appraiser to offer to buy an item. 90% of the time they'll give a low appraisal so they can buy it cheap.
