Someone please explain the ending (Spoilers)

Ok so I just finished watching this, and I like many of you was excited because it's helmed by Bryan Bertino (The Strangers).

I enjoyed the film for the most part, however I'm perplexed by the ending. Who were those kids? Were they just doing this randomly? Or were these kids doing this for a purpose? What did the kid in the beginning of the film have to do with the rest? Did they know all of these adults personally? I don't know if this has been explained anywhere so I apologize if it has. Thanks for any of the help you can provide, it would be nice to have a better understanding of where Bryan was going with this. Take care all!

Yeah Bitch!, Magnets Ooohh!

reply

"Bryan"? Are you pals with the director?

reply

Surely you have better things to do with your time, and to answer your question I did meet him. So relax?

Yeah Bitch!, Magnets Ooohh!

reply

I also have met numerous actors/directors while working, but I don't call them "Matthew," "Martin" or "Brad."

reply

Oh ok, I must have missed that part about having to do what others would do in the human rules handbook. My apologies "Rip"

Yeah Bitch!, Magnets Ooohh!

reply

Calling actors and directors by their first names is tacky, and very E!

Industry standards are always nice to know.

reply

So, your opinions are now deemed the hallmark of what's socially acceptable? In addition if you were even to be so lucky, why would I have to follow? This is America after all....

Yeah Bitch!, Magnets Ooohh!

reply

I told you, industry standard. But, if you choose to emulate E! practices, it's your prerogative. What does "America" have to do with it? No flag waving required.

reply

Thanks for the lesson, Bryan's next movie will be better rest assured.

Yeah Bitch!, Magnets Ooohh!

reply

How cute. Well, enjoy Walmart.

reply

What else should he call him? Would Mr.Bertino suit you better?

I doubt he cares what anyone calls him as long they are watching his films. And if he does care that much and has such a huge ego that he gets offended at people calling him by his first name, then that is just sad and ridiculous.

You sound arrogant yourself. Save your Film Class 101 bullshxt for someone who might actually care and be impressed.

reply

Again, I have worked in the industry for thirty years. Spare me your 101 !@*$.

It is common courtesy to call a professional by their last name.

This isn't about arrogance, but apparently, it is about your insecurity. Just because you don't have manners, don't assume that those of us who do, have huge egos. It shows your lack of breeding.

reply

Bryan even stated in an interview article that at first it was weird to call Liz Tyler by Liz...then he got used to it. Apparently he has no issues with first names,

In person you would maybe address someone as Mrs or mr, but after awhile you can drop that and use first name usually.

Online, no one cares what you use. I doubt Bryan Bertino would care.

reply

Again, dear, I am speaking of the industry standard. In the industry, outside of Cher, etc, you refer to an actor by their LAST name. You never call Brad Pitt, "Brad." That's E! white trash stuff.

By the way, Elizabeth Taylor DESPISED "Liz" - HATED it.

Online, nobody has any class, I realize. By all means, join the unwashed.

reply

So everyone calls them Mr Pitt or Mrs Streep? Or like, "hey, Pitt"?

I was an extra on We Are Marshall and no one used titles..we called the actors by first name so did everyone else, even the crew we called by name, and not one single person cared. I met Kate Mara briefly in between takes and everyone was calling her Kate. She was fine with it or else faked it pretty good.

I'm not saying youre wrong, im sure some people like being that professional

I wasnt talking about elizabeth taylor, sorry. im talking about liv tyler, i made a typo, but meant liv tyler from the strangers

reply

They fake pretty well. I've been doing this 30 years with a lot of big names, and they have visibly cringed when people say, "Hey, Matthew!" etc.

Extras calling actors by their first name is considered a MAJOR faux pas. MAJOR.

Upper level crew never would do it, and extras are at the bottom (sorry, but it's true). If the actor tells us to use his/her first name, we can. But most of us are too busy to be chatting with performers at all. We just don't carry on conversations with them - they usually are in their own world, or resting quietly. It's just not the way it works, unless you're a hairdresser or make-up person. No, I am not a production assistant, nor grip/electric.

Granted, when conversation comes up, we usually just start talking to them, as we are standing right there. Being as the crew is large, it is considered normal, since they are likely not going to know our name, unless we are a director, asst director or producer. Large crews can be hundreds of people.

Some actors are more friendly than others.

As I've said before, actors will respect you more, if you just smile and nod. Don't fawn - THEY HATE THAT. Don't say how much they mean to you. It makes them uncomfortable. Just say something normal. Yes, you can talk. But you don't know them well enough to be on an immediate first-name basis if you are an extra.

reply

I have to say Kate Mara was lovely..very sweet natured and was asking us all questions about our own selves. It was between takes when shes walking up to the people chanting on the lawn, i was right beside of her and some other extras started talking to her and soon we were all talking, she was asking names and asking stuff like where people were from, if theyd been an extra before..just small talk. After doing the scene again and they took a break to set up, she walked over to us and chatted again. I think she was bored lol..its pretty boring being on a movie set, lots of waiting and sitting around

I never personally met him but some guy with a megaphone called out "hheeeeresss matthew" when matthew m walked on set..they were goofing around i guess

I guess i lucked out then with that experience because everyone was super nice and laid back. Youd even see them around town at dinner or something when they werent shooting and they were nice

I have no idea what she was but some woman who seemed to be in charge somehow would walk around and talk to random people and mention they should go to LA to be into the movie biz..i noticed she singled out the best looking people lol i didnt get told to go to LA lol

reply

It's different from set to set. Actor to actor. Kate Mara is a different generation from my more common experiences.

Rest assured, I wouldn't assume chumminess with a lot of the larger names.

Hate to tell you this, but "extras" are avoided as much as possible. We like to shove you in extras holding, and hope that you don't trash the place. And stay away from the crew's craft service table. If the AD department is doing its job, you shouldn't be anywhere near the actors, unless in a scene. More than once, I've seen 2nd ADs dress down an extra for approaching an actor.

reply

Wow lol guess i had a rare awesome experience because everyone was great

The actors would joke with extras all the time or mingle in some way. For my part, we were never kept in holding, in between breaks we plopped down outside on the sidelines to watch the actors or something, they never treated us bad, from my experience anyway. Some friends filmed for more scenes and said the same thing..they were treated great

Maybe because it was a small town and a true life dramatic story?

reply

Holy sh!t. You are clearly the only one who gives a *beep* that this guy was called by his first name. Get off his jock lol wow. And I'm sure you've worked in the industry 30 years, doesn't mean you're not being an arrogant dickrider haha.

reply

If you watched The Strangers, you know how this director rolls. Yes they were doing it randomly just like in The Strangers. The characters also make retarded decisions...just like in The Strangers. I wouldn't think too deep about this film; the director certainly didn't.

The scene with the boy in the beginning could've been fabricated to scare the victims. If you look at him while he is getting shot, there is no entry wound on this head. Who knows though really.

EDIT: I just read through the cast credits, and all the other kids were listed as "Jacob's Friend" therefore, Jacob (the kid who was shot in the beginning) was behind it all :/

reply

Unless he was a friend of Jacob's at some point, but he turned on him and killed him to help out with the grand scheme of the plan. That kid looked legit terrified too.

reply

It's funny you should say that, because after that first scene I was thinking "gee, that kid's acting isn't very convincing". Now I know why! XD

reply

Wow , can't believe how quickly this thread went bad.

reply

Amen!
