$300,000 home ... 'Normal'

At the end Jackie comments on how she could live in a normal house, a $300,000 home, and be okay with it.

Maybe in FL that's "normal" but where I live, most average people are happy in much less expensive houses. I personally was thrilled to buy a house for half that much and felt like I had "made it" ... and most people I know are still renting, so were envious of me when I bought mine.

I guess it's all relative.

You got me to look up at least something. The median sales price of a home sold in March of this year was $271,600. Admittedly that was median and not average, but she's not so far off.

they'd prob be better off with a 300 k house. the dogs could find their way out without taking a dump on the carpets. and it'd force them to not bring home FIVE shopping carts of useless crap from toy's r us, every month. I mean she comes in with like several new bicycles, and puts them in the garage where there are already like 50 or 60 bicycles!!!! I'll bet most of them have never or will never be used.

reply

I agree, they might be able to keep it clean and less cluttered if they were forced to live in a smaller space. The bicycle situation was utterly ridiculous. They should have a yard sale just to unload those bikes alone!

Wow, I guess the people around here (myself included, lol) are below average when it comes to our home buying expenses, then.

But then again, I believe in living within means and having money in savings, for kids' education expenses, to donate to charities, pay bills, and so forth. I am happy in a 4-bedroom 3-bath house that my kids and I can keep clean by ourselves without feeling the need to hire other people to be our servants.

Anyway, thanks for looking that up for me, I guess in this instance Jackie is not in la-la land!

House prices are all so relative to the location, location, location thing. Huge difference what you get for the same money in say NYC area and in the Midwest.

Other big thing is how close you are to a city. Once lived in the Washington DC area and you could get pretty much the same house for about half the money if you were willing to add 20 minutes more to your commute into the city center.

So that average price is just that....not your average actual house.

Yeah like I was saying, prices in Florida ... and in the Orlando area at that ... are probably a lot higher than in my Southwestern area of of the country.

Actually, Orlando real estate is fairly cheap----and if they considered the nearby Ocala area, VERY cheap. $300K gets you a quite nice house in the area. The only Orlando area that it wouldn't is Celebration.

How do I know this? I live in Portland, OR and was stunned by how much more house I'd get if I moved there, for less than what I could sell my home for here. $300K (especially when this was filmed) can get you 4 or 5 bedrooms, your own in-ground pool, nice appliances and sometimes even lakefront property

the best house these days is..one that fully paid off

I'll agree to that!!

Well, she lives in Windermere...300k home is nice however most homes are half a million or more.

I live south of the Siegels about 30 mins. 300k home is like a mansion here.

Try living in the Bay Area(and not even in SF, more like Benicia, Fairfield, etc). We had a modest 1300sqft 4/2 and it was over $220k back in 2001 when we bought it. My husband's job was in that area and other than having a 1+hr commute(which would negate housing savings by eating it up in gas), it was where we had to live and it was not even in a great area(good are) and the house was 15+yrs old. He still works in the Bay Area but we bought a house 2hrs away(more in the Sacramento Valley area) and he has an apartment near his job while we have the small 2/1 85yr old house(which I LOVE) and our house payment is lower than the rent for the apartment. Now that is some sad state of affairs. Even with the crash starting in 06, homes near his job are still going at $400k(unless you want something that has been empty for several years and destroyed by squatters). It's all relative depending on where you work and where your jobs are. The town we are in is rural, farming community but a better environment for our son(17) and short of the irrepressible heat, it's where I will stay. LOL

I live in Newport Beach CA and 300k will get you a not fancy 1 bd condo, if that. 2500 square foot single family 4 bd home? Around 1.5 million and up in a not so fancy neighborhood that is no frills inside. You can get something 2500 sq feet and reasonably nice for in the less shishi parts of Newport for 1.7. 1.8 to 2.2 will get you 2500 to 3000. I guess all the neighborhoods in Newport should be considered fancy.
