I've been trying to figure this out for awhile.

Was the woman who picked HushPuppy up her real mother? Was she just a woman working at the brothel that took a liking to her? It never explained whether she's the mother or not. Then Hushpuppy just leaves with the other girls and that is the end of it.

Yes. She travelled by boat to Elysium Fields (Heaven) to find her mother who "ran away". It gave her strength to face the subsequent passing of Wink. She was able to eventually confront those those "Beasts".
