Where did he find the money to travel so much?

I get that Marin Ireland's character was travelling for work purposes and therefore it was paid for by her company. But what about Messina's character? Where did he come up with all of the money to travel and follow her around? I know that he was a marginally successful writer but I find it hard to believe that he was making enough to take all of these trips.
