Lame and beyond boring

His reviews are much better, should have just stuck to those

True.

It basically felt like a waste of time, especially in comparison to what we COULD be watching instead.

How many AVGN game review episodes could we have now, if the movie hadn't been made, and if Rolfe had instead continued making them?

I think we could possibly have as many as forty episodes, but even twelve episodes would be a goldmine compared to the movie.

So much effort and so much time, money, and patience, frustration and whatnot was spent to create .. THIS.

If even HALF of all that would have gone to creating more AVGN episodes.. man. I don't even want to think about what we could have instead of this movie, because it's too sad.

He just wanted to make a feature length film

What a crime

He didn't fool anyone. He asked his fans directly for money to make a movie. I knew what he was making when he asked for funding. I gave him the money because he has given me a lot for free. Even if the movie sucked, you cannot say that he swindled us.

"This did not feel like a long review of a game, it felt like a long skit with a review at the end. You know how he fills a lot of his episodes with wacky cgi and characters,"

Exactly.

This movie is like a stretched version of "Rob the Robot" episode, with a lot of other crap thrown in. Without the game reviews (except E.T. - oh, sorry, "EeTee" (groan), while the CREDITS ROLL ALREADY!).

Are there any individuals, who actually think those theatrick gimmicks are the best parts of his reviews?

Or did the gaming community pay for the movie, because they actually expected it to be about _G_A_M_E_S_ ?

It's like Rolfe forgot about games, and cranked all kinds of other stuff in as much as he could. It's not about whether you use rendered graphics or plastic models, it's not about whether you include giant monsters or Fuji-san, it's not about whether you use greenscreen or not.

The important thing is GAMES (and game systems)! That's why people started watching AVGN.

Without games (and game systems), no one would have watched AVGN episodes.

His horror interest I have never understood (isn't life horrible enough without artificial, human-added horror?), but I never minded it, as long as there were good videos about GAMES. They didn't even have to be AVGN-specific - anything that Rolfe wanted to make that was about video games, computer games, console games, or old game systems, I would be willing to watch.

But this movie was not about any of those things. THAT, in my opinion, was its downfall. He should have made a video-game-based movie, and THEN, when that movie is a success, he could have used the profits to make his horror-zombie-B-movie. Instead, he tried to cram everything into this one movie, except..

... games.

His name was James, but he forgot the games.

This poem was actually less lame and more poignant than the movie.

I agree.

I never watched the AVGN episodes to see the ****pickle or Mecha Death Christ, or Rob the Robot, or even the silly ''Bugs Bunny takes a dump on your face'' or ''Spiderman guest appearance'' nonsense.

I watched it for the reviews. This movie is 0,001% reviews (namely the one in the credits) and 99,999% of that unfunny garbage I mentioned earlier. It's not the the side of AVGN I wanted to see. This movie should have been 12 reviews, interspersed with comedic nonsense if he felt he needed to. Instead we got... this.

You are joking right? No one watches it for the spot on reviews, they watch it for the comedic crap he does and how absurd he rags on old games. He is not a real game reviewer, he has even stated that before. I feel sorry for how dumb you are.

The problem is he completely threw the AVGN character out the window to be replaced by some happy go lucky super nerd who everyone loves. The nerd that was in this movie is not the one I've been watching for years review games. He was barely angry, barely swore, barely drank, barely reviewed games and had a sidekick that wasn't Mike for some reason. Even in the game review in the end he was super nice and praised it like it was a good game.

reply

That's because the moral of the story was that "telling the truth is better." I know that theme wasn't expressed well (somewhat shoehorned in the movie towards the end), but that's why the game was praised.

What a load of *beep* E.T. was not a good game, it is not the truth. The Nerd we all know and love from the youtube videos tells the truth, that is what everyone *beep* loves about him. He was angry because he was playing crap games and giving them a proper truthful review; they sucked.

reply

I don't even think the review at the end was saying it was a good game. Only that it wasn't the worst game ever. Indian Jones on Atari is also a pain in the ass to play. Its just as confussing as E.T.. But even as a kid i played E.T. alot just to see weird *beep* happen.

reply

@Caribbean_Smurf LOL!! you really want to see reviews for old badly designed NES games? ahahaha

reply

I agree.

I was expecting lots of video game "cameos". Like this game is *beep* like Dr jackyll and mr hide things like that but because of the Copyright he used some *beep* cgi, original games in this movie. stupid as world duty 3000 a call of duty rip off. This movie was lame boring Extremly boring. the review in the credits scene is the only worthy part.

James you wasted so many resources to make this *beep* movie. AS a AVGN fan and a gamer I just really disappointed.

So much time wasted. We could have lots of AVGN episodes instead of THIS CRAP.

"So much time wasted. We could have lots of AVGN episodes instead of THIS CRAP."

This was my point exactly.

The resources, the money, the energy, the support, the time and the effort of all those people, including James himself (I do know he worked really, really hard for it, like, perhaps inhumanly hard, for extended period of time) would have bought the audience something much better, and chronologically speaking, larger quantities of it.

I mean, if he can crank out two AVGN episodes a month (or whatever the pace used to be), surely with all those resources (etc.), he could have cranked at least one every two months. How long was the movie in production? Well, let's say three years.

Three years times two episodes per month - that'd be six per year. Three times six is eighteen. If he missed making a few episodes because of family events, monster madness or the other 'stuff' that he likes to do (I wish he would only make AVGN episodes, but that's obviously never going to happen, because his interests are so far spread to other directions), we could still have had at least FIFTEEN QUALITY AVGN episodes!

I do realize, like someone correctly pointed out, that he actually DID make a few AVGN episodes, while also working on the movie, so it wasn't a complete "either/or"-situation.

However, I'd like to point out the relatively (understandably) poor quality of a lot of those episodes. The quality wasn't even up to par of the worst older episodes, let alone the gems. Some of the episodes were awful, some were passable, and there were a couple of real gems.

But even if we take that into account, I am sure we could still have had at least ten-to-twelve quality AVGN episodes in addition to what we got, and what we got, could actually also be of much better quality (James wouldn't have beeen so drained by making the movie, which would result in better episode quality).

Of course it could be that one big reason for the quality decline is the fact that James has pretty much reviewed all the frustratingly bad games that caused him awful anger as a kid, and as the result, the 'real anger' isn't there anymore, because he isn't feeling genuinely angry about some game that he has never played before.

When all those games have been reviewed, it's completely understandable, that the whole AVGN situation has lost a lot of steam, anger and even 'point'. What's the point anymore, when he has satisfied his list?

I still think, that if he wanted to focus properly on AVGN again, he could easily just pick pretty much any random game and make a good review of it. And the audiences would like it, because let's face it - THAT is what drew in the audiences in the first place.

Heck, he might win over even some new fans.

If I was in a position to give him any advice, I would tell him to focus on making good quality AVGN episodes, and leave everything else on the backburner or a smaller priority. At least for awhile. This would get everything back on track, and make people forgive him for making a boring, nonsensical movie instead of a great AVGN-experience, which is what the audiences were hoping for.
