Why not name the rapists?

I'm sorry if this sounds naive or whatever, but why didn't they name the assailants? I don't know much about the US military and I'm not terribly familiar with the legal ramifications of disclosing who these men are.

There must be a legal reason for not naming them, right? I can't think of any other reason(s) why they wouldn't say who raped them. Could the women be sued for slander or something? Otherwise, why not name them and rightfully humiliate these criminals. If these men assaulted them, they most likely have and are currently assaulting other women. Bringing these men to light might help other women who have been through the same thing with the same men.

They would most likely get sued for slander.

I see, thanks!

This is a late reply but there is an article that IMDB featured from TheWrap.com and it has the filmmakers' response to why they didn't go that route (naming names)

Quote:
"We decided ...that we did not want to intentionally out four or five people, because then we ran the fear that the audience would feel sated and it would become like a Hollywood gotcha movie, and nothing would really happen," she said. "Now that the joint chiefs have seen it, they know how to find these guys, if they want to. There weren't that many 'airmen of the year' the year that Jessica was (raped). But it's not about those few guys. We wanted the anger and the focus to stay on the commanders. This is not going to change if we out them and people feel like 'Okay, we've got four guys?done, we can all go home and feel safe.'"

Anyway, hope that answered your question! :)

Actually, there might be hundreds of "Airmen of the Year" during any particular year. Every unit (and higher collection of units) and base might name someone, so that small fact really didn't make it easier to find anyone.

But, the USAF does have all the CID reports and other background, so they could easily find out who was charged.

1. Only a court can determine whether they are rapists or not.

2. The above didn't happen.
