It had some great nostalgia and great cameos but the story was too chopped up. Why did the aliens get offended and what was their motivation for attacking? It felt like lets take a bunch of ideas, throw it into a pot and see if we end up with something.

Peter Dinklage was the only one who was good. Adam Sandler seemed like he mailed this one in.

Wreck It Ralph did a great job paying homage to that era and had a very good story.

I am really glad I waited to see this on free tv.

Apparently the video that was sent out was a challenge for the best in the universe etc They interpreted it as a war challenge or something.

It's just a fun kids movie, no need to pick it apart. But to answer your question the aliens mistook the footage of video games as a threat of war.

For me, it was better than expected. I had a lot of fun with it and I thought all the actors did a decent job.
