Steven Seagal's weight

I know this has been brought up a bunch, but what caused Steven Seagal to gain so much weight? Why hasn't he made an effort to get back in shape?

reply

Because he's lazy, plain and simple. I also doubt that he's a vegeterian like he claims he is. All those pounds can only be piled up with eating lots of protein, or really fatty foods. Either that, or he has health problems and he's on steroids because of it.

reply

FFS, the guy is 60 years old!

Maybe you are better waiting till you are at that age & then you can compare shapes & sizes with each other.

reply

He's living the good life now...

I've seen Seagal in training very recently and I guarantee he could outlast 99% of all of his naysayers in an exhibition sparring match (which is really all you can do with his style without breaking bones or killing someone). I know guys who are 2nd-3rd-4th dons and are rounder/bigger, much liek Sammo Hung, who almost never gets *beep* for his weight. Just because they're gutty doesn't mean they don't have stamina.

40+ years of training, every day, and being an near grandmastery-level with a Katana, as well as being a crack-shot that regularly competes (and wins) in shooting tournaments is NOT the product of laziness.

There have been many fighters both younger and fatter than Seagal that could do 10-15 rounds in a boxing fight "name one, hoboboxerjoe"

okay: Tex Cobb. Tank Abbot, there's two. I could come up with more if I really wanted to dedicate myself to this argument.

reply

Tank Abbot had a gut but he was not fat.

his arms and legs were pretty much through and through muscle and when he hit someone it showed.

Seagal has chicken arms and a biscuit gut.

reply

His legs and arms had no bones, is this what you're saying? 

The reason for the weight gain is really quite ingenious. He eats too much and doesn't exercise enough. Brilliant!

Also him being fat means people talk about his weight rather than how bad his movies are.

He is definitely lazy. There are many people are 60+ years of age who are in much, much better shape than him. The quality of the movies he has appeared in for almost 15 years now are a direct testament to his laziness. The constant stunt doubles, body doubles, not even returning in post-production to record his own dialogue etc. There is nothing which suggests lazy more than doing movies of this level of quality several times a year.

I was a huge fan of Seagal's early films. I even enjoyed "On Deadly Ground", even though it played a large part in flushing his career down the toilet. But his direct to video output since the millennium has been so bad that now I don't even consider wasting my time with them now.

Worse still, it seems all the rumours about him being a giant twat in his personal life are true. Sucking up to Putin and defending his despicable actions in Ukraine/Crimea is beyond reprehensible.

I would be very sceptical about him being a vegetarian also, and he comes across almost as if he's an alcoholic. He looks very depressed, as if he's addicted to junk food and alcohol. Plus the way he mumbles and doesn't even bother to record his own dialogue in many films further suggests that.

I've heard about people being vegetarian and being users of hard drugs before. It's not common, but it's not impossible.

Wayne Static of the band Static-X was a vegetarian, and he had a drinking problem, and used hard drugs.

I like Seagal's early films, particularly Above the Law and Out for Justice, but I hated On Deadly Ground; it contradicted itself in the last action sequence. While a well filmed sequence on its own, it destroyed the message that the movie was otherwise getting across. And yes, the movie played a big role in hurting his career.

He's not the only actor to have his dialogue dubbed by other people in movies. Olivier Gruner has had his voice dubbed on some of his projects, such as Mars (he was actually dubbed for the whole movie). But I guess Seagal gets more flak because a lot of people love to hate on the guy. (And yes, I know Gruner is French, and English is his second language, but the point still stands that Seagal is not the only actor to fit that bill.)

I have a friend whose uncle worked behind the scenes on one of his movies (I don't remember which one), and he said that he was a prick.

There was a lot wrong with On Deadly Ground. The spiritual crap and the speech were both cringeworthy, and the hypocrisy of blowing up an oil rig while preaching environmental nonsense was ridiculous. However, the action scenes were pretty good, especially the climax, and it was well photographed. Michael Caine was amusing in it also. Not a good film by any means and I understand why the critics slammed it but compared to recent Seagal films I think it's a masterpiece.

Indeed he is not the only one to be dubbed. Bruce Willis has recently been dubbed at times, and there have been others, including Wesley Snipes also in some of his lame direct to video films.
