My review of Authors Anonymous. Feedback welcome, just my opinion

This movie literally made me want to blow my own brains out a number of times, no joke these people are just so completely unlikable. I guess that is the point though, and you will only understand if you stay till the end, and let the credits roll just a bit for the finish that actually makes the torture of enduring these pompous fools worth your time. The acting is all really top notch, and what you basically get is a Waiting for Guffman idea with a really badly matched book club. Hard to recommend this movie though as it really is so painful to Enjoy or experience, and I know that is all to the credit of the writers, and actors involved in creating this so I want to make sure they get all the credit, but ouch I feel like you hear tell people feel after a long mule ride through the canyons. The magic invisible camera crews, and the many angles are just dizzying. There is no way that this is supposed to be funny, it is supposed to be ironic, and boy is it. So I throw it to you with my hands up, this is not going to be the worst movie that you ever watched by accident. It is supposed to be like that.

Thanks buddy for the warning.

People are just jealous, because "voices" are talking only to me...

I really enjoyed it. It's a little heavy on the sarcasm but overall it's more of a feel good movie than anything to me.
You said it yourself, great acting, it was indeed great acting, with a lot of expression work done by highly competent and thoroughly likeable actors.

Thematically it's a heavy criticism of the industry or perhaps just people in general, as in the "dumb blonde" getting the book deal, but it goes back on that with the ending so it's not just about that. I like the optimism here, making the naive and trusting, good friend girl get all the succes while the hacks, the lazy, the bimbo and the slacker wannabe all get left out in the cold.

Some of the side characters are awfully enjoyable too, the German girlfriend is so cute(even if she sounded more Dutch than German), the mother, while a stereotype mother, does her part well. There are no real slumps in the casting at all and that in itself is quite amazing to pull off to me (or just great directing)

So I definitely don't agree that there are no likeable characters here, sure some of them are obnoxious but they were supposed to be and they did it well.

Watch a movie like "Blue Jasmine" for a main character that is highly unlikeable and yet works so well.

Anyway, just wanted it point out that I definitely enjoyed the movie and would recommend any grown up to watch it.

My son was in an improv group. In his last year before he split off from the group, there was a lady that had just joined. Shortly after she left she went on to create Spanx, and is now one of the richest ladies in the country.
When I read this synopsis - I think of her. And her great story.
And I'll bet her board meetings are entertaining!

So, Debniak, where exactly did you see this movie that you "walked out after 35 minutes"? That's a pretty neat trick since this is March 27 and the movie isn't released until April 18! You must have ESP. More likely you're just another Internet troll. Sad. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm anxious to see how it turns out. It's a shame to see crap like yours posted. You must have a personal beef with someone associated with the production.

reply

You walk out on a movie after 35 minutes because it didn't cause you to "feel genuinely good about ourselves"? You walked out so you could "preserve what little self-esteem we may have left?"

Wow. Some people are haters, some are trolls, and then some are just really pathetic.

wannbe and unpublished authors may not like this as it is a morale killer... so strugglers who have put it all in one basket may be depressed after watching this, but for others willing to take a joke this is fabulous...
it's making fun of:
1. published authors who sleep their way to a deal
2. those who think they can write but can't ...
but for others who think they can write and actually can it's not all that bad...

I did not enjoy the movie at all!
I waited for it to get better, based on the positive reviews!
I had high hopes for this film, and was especially interested in seeing Dennis Farina's final performance. It broke my heart that this was his final film.
He did a fine job, in a film that I did not like one bit. This movie seems to be a love it or hate it phenomenon here on IMDb. I only gave it one star, and I warned people away from it.
There are plenty of positive reviews on this film, so many that I felt I wasted my time waiting for a reward that never came. I'm sure people won't miss much if they choose to skip this one based on my review. And those who are determined to see it and like it won't be deterred by my angry review. I felt gypped, you felt suicidal. I think that speaks volumes LOL.
The camera work, and plot device of the mockumentary made me physically nauseous.
My suggestion (for those who have yet to screen this) is to watch it with an open mind, but if you don't enjoy it, don't keep going thinking it will grow on you. And do NOT beat yourself up for not liking it! I am genuinely confused by the positive responses, and wonder if we saw the same movie!
I usually agree with the majority, and I am anything BUT an internet troll.
That movie spurred me to write my first review ever, in over two years on this site.
I always felt that what I had to say, had already been said enough times that I could just "agree" with the helpful reviews, and go my way.
This one brought out the critic in me!
I resented the film, for taking me to a place that bored me to tears, and kept me barely interested (all of my interest was due to skill of the actors, who only had so much to work with), until the all too bitter end.
I felt that it reeked of superiority, and self esteem issues. It came off to me as a rant against instant celebrity, and people with charm. Some folks have an X factor to them, that causes their star to rise, while others simply don't have what it takes. That is not grounds for a film, imo.
The romantic stuff was really contrived, and felt icky to me.
I researched the writer, and came up with some baffling information on his background. He has no real credits to his name? And no real books? He wrote for a newspaper, and he wrote a (semi?) autobiographical novel about his late pets who died in a fire.
That is all I can find on his "career" as writer, of note. Certainly no experience in the screenplay department, and no work in the industry prior to this movie, that I could find. Please, anyone who wants to, correct me if I am wrong about his credentials.
I found nothing noteworthy besides this project, so this movie took on an even darker tone after I read about it's creator.
If I'd read Bio and credentials BEFORE watching the film, I would have either skipped it entirely, or bailed out during the first twenty minutes. I suppose that fueled my ranty review of this movie, and my one star rating..
I am sorry to anyone who loved it, but that's why they call them opinions.
This was, for me, a bad movie, and a bad experience. I chose to warn people.
This is entirely MY feedback, I do not mean to put words in your mouth.
It seems you tried hard to give this film a fair chance. In fact, you go out of your way to make note of what you felt was right with a film that caused you to wish yourself into the next life more than once!
So no, it was not just you.
And my opinion is a visceral reaction, for some reason, to a film that just felt twisted and ugly, but most offensive to me, DULL.
I hope I never see anything like this again.
Usually the reviews reflect a more clear picture of a film. I thought I was losing my mind, as I waited for the "good part" to come. When it didn't I guess I went off the rails, LOL.
I did review a few other obscure films today, in hopes of helping people make informed viewing decisions.
Your response was more interesting to me than the film. End rant, LOL.

Me Lady if I may be so bold (sorry reference to your screen name) ;)

Been so many more movies under the bridge since this nonsense, yet seeing the promo picture with those cheesey (you nailed it) superior "something special surrounded by nobodies" looks on their faces just brings it back. The longing desire to pound spikes into my head. Glad to hear from someone for once who understands the fact that none of these people had any redeeming qualities, and the fact that such great talent was just wasted.

The irony is not lost on me how pretentious I sound.

Thank you again for speaking up. ;)

The movie was very funny, but I am sure painful to watch if you are struggling to make it in Hollywood as a writer.
I am sure there are many writers fighting for a shot at a writing gig/agent etc. who have failed time and time again because they just don't get the fact that they are failures in their craft.
Cuoco's line about writing from the heart could be good advice to any writer who thinks they can write simply because they went to film school or have a drama degree.

reply

The acting, characters, writing....all could be better...it's just over the top like satirical....if it were a skit then the individual scenes and behavior by the characters might be funny but since it's supposed to be a more realistic telling of a story....it doesn't fly.

This line of text confuses me on everyone's posts as it is usually unrelated to the topic at hand...

I'm a published author, have been for a while, and this movie made me laugh hysterically. It hit very close to home. I feel like I know all of these people personally, because I do. I know a lady in real life who was so delusional, she threw her own self-published book signing at an IHOP. This movie went down the list of all of the personality types you typically find in a writers group.

I could see how people who aren't writers would not like or understand this movie. They (we) are this unlikeable in person, too.

I've watched it twice in two days, and I never watch movies twice. I will probably buy a copy and watch it many times. That's how therapeutic and hilarious it was to me.

Note to writers: don't tell other "writers" about your good fortune.

I ended up giving it a 5. It was okay. Nothing special. As a writer myself I could relate to it some. I like the concept, but the execution of the idea ended up being nothing special.

Writers can be some of the most miserable people on the planet (mainly screenwriters trying to break in). Check out the IMDB Shop Talk Writers Forum to see what I mean. You have all these nobodies arguing over how to "make it" in the industry, yet most of them have ever even come close to selling a screenplay or having a movie made. And whenever a new person comes in that's had a little bit of success they all just rip on them until they leave. Writers are not very supportive people.
