This movie taught me not to trust IMDB reviews

Call me naive, but I never suspected that many IMDB user reviews were fake, until I saw (at last count) 11 out of 13 extremely positive reviews for this terrible movie.

Again, I feel pretty dumb for not imagining that filmmakers and publicists would post fake positive reviews here. I am a cynical person, after all, and already know not to trust amazon book reviews, yelp restaurant reviews, etc.

Seeing the implausibly positive reviews here ("my favorite movie"?!) is even more annoying than the movie itself!

Talk about adding insult to injury!

Of course, the assumption here is that everyone who liked the movie is wrong and only you know "Truth."

reply

Actually Gittes, the "assumption" is that when almost all of the rave reviews are written by people who joined IMDB at the same time they wrote the review (or have been a member for 5 or 10 years and never written a single review or post(!)), and have written nothing since, that they are corporate shills. Just click on the names of the people here who loved the film and you'll see that most of them only joined to write this review or this is their sole activity in all the years they've been a member. Suspicious to say the least. I trust reviews by people who have written and rated movies before and since their review, especially when they give a film 10 stars.

THANK YOU! I just came to the boards after leaving my first one star review. The positive reviews caused me to watch the whole darned thing, and by the time it ended I was foaming at the mouth with boredom and anxiety over the positive reviews!
It sure seems to be (to me) a much loved film, for such a dreadful personal experience.
And I am a movie lover, very forgiving, able to suspend disbelief, and not nit-picky. I am glad I am not alone.

And may I say thank YOU! The characters in this thing seemed more to me like self-obsessed, unemployed (read unemployable) actor hopefuls deluding themselves into thinking they'll have careers someday rather than writers working on their craft. It all makes me think that the unreasonable number of positive reviews here were posted by friends of the cast. I managed to stay with it until the end because I was morbidly curious to see just how bad it could get. WOW!

reply

Oh man, I feel sorry for you. IMDb has been unreliable for many, many years. I'm getting real tired of having to go through the history of every reviewer. If only there was a site that actually applied some logical rules to filter out these people related to the ones who worked on the film.

I have no clue why I Redbox this movie. I'm 20 minutes in to it and it's boring as hell. Can't believe this movie was even made. I most likely rented it because of the big bang girl which is not really a good actress.

reply

Well... I liked it, hardly a favorite movie but I found it surprisingly amusing DESPITE the rating (which currently is 4.4)

I'm gonna refuse you an offer you can't make
