To Help Figure Out Which Side You'll Be On

Since there appears to be two divisive sides, those that really don't like and those that really liked it, I have two questions for you to help figure out if you'll like it.

Have you heard of Charles Bukowski? Have you read The Great Gatsby?

If you answered 'no' to both questions, you probably won't like it. If you answered 'yes' to both questions, you should find it quite funny and enjoy it.

Wellllllllll... I haven't read a book in almost 10 years definitly not The Great Gatsby (even though I've seen the movie 'G' with Richard T Jones which was inspired by it) and never heard of Charles Bukowski but I still managed to like it...

So it's not all that cut and dry

I'm gonna refuse you an offer you can't make

That's a surprising take to me. I've definitely heard of Bukowski and read The Great Gatsby and found the movie fairly terrible. Actually, I thought it was utter schlock and kinda think it's aimed much more at people that like Twilight or something...

I think the format of the movie being a faux documentary makes it all the worse as well and may only endear it to those that like things like "reality television." I mean, what was the point of all that again? If it strove to be realistic at all then I'd understand, but it didn't and was as absurd as your typical Rom-Com. And while I love the likes of mockumentaries like Best in Show, The Big Tease, or This is Spinal Tap... they get bonus points for the style because of their complete absurdity and use the style to add to the effect. Those movies are "all-in." Heck, this movie far too often seems to even forget that it's a supposed mockumentary.

This movie was just... a mess.

It may be fitting with the casting choices though, inasmuch as I wouldn't be surprised if someone liked this movie if they also told me that their favorite comedy is The Big Bang Theory, I guess.

Also, it currently has a 7% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 3.1 average rating (out of 10). Based on the original post's stance, I'm guessing we're supposed to believe that movie reviewers have never heard of Bukowski or read The Great Gatsby then?

Yes and yes and rated it a 7.
