That's a surprising take to me. I've definitely heard of Bukowski and read The Great Gatsby and found the movie fairly terrible. Actually, I thought it was utter schlock and kinda think it's aimed much more at people that like Twilight or something...
I think the format of the movie being a faux documentary makes it all the worse as well and may only endear it to those that like things like "reality television." I mean, what was the point of all that again? If it strove to be realistic at all then I'd understand, but it didn't and was as absurd as your typical Rom-Com. And while I love the likes of mockumentaries like Best in Show, The Big Tease, or This is Spinal Tap... they get bonus points for the style because of their complete absurdity and use the style to add to the effect. Those movies are "all-in." Heck, this movie far too often seems to even forget that it's a supposed mockumentary.
This movie was just... a mess.
It may be fitting with the casting choices though, inasmuch as I wouldn't be surprised if someone liked this movie if they also told me that their favorite comedy is The Big Bang Theory, I guess.
Also, it currently has a 7% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 3.1 average rating (out of 10). Based on the original post's stance, I'm guessing we're supposed to believe that movie reviewers have never heard of Bukowski or read The Great Gatsby then?
