If the perpetrator was using torture in order to extract information in an interrogation, how did the victim speak in order to give the information sought if his/her vocal cords were paralyzed by the pincers in order to stop the sounds of screaming that would come from the torture?

I've watched all 5 two part episodes, and I have to say it's grown on me. I'd put it up there with Spiral, but nowhere near Wallander,
