I'm thinking Synecdoche, New York

some weird stuff like, worlds greatest dad, god bless america, terri, the promotion, maybe, gary teh tennis coach, they seem to have a similar feel, but tim really did some seriously funny things in this

"the day I tried to live, I learned that I was alive"

a recent film I watched from Norway called Oslo, August 31st had very similar themes to The Comedy, like how a decaying society creates numbness and emptiness in its children and so on and so forth. It's not a comedy though, by any standard whatsoever.

Mike Leigh's Naked. Five easy pieces.

Visioneers with Zach Galifianakis.

Yeah, that's a good little film, actually. Nice recommendation.

Orgies are not too much fun if no one wants to do it with you.

^^^ and also Synecdoche, New York -- I watched both of those within a span of 2 weeks, accidentally / on purpose. Depression and mid-life crisis = funny how it impacts your entertainment choices. :)

Also concur with "Happiness" ... and nobody mentioned it yet, but "Broken Flowers" with sad-clown Bill Murray. Also, comments on Youtube for the trailer mention Greenberg (Ben Stiller) and maybe Garden State (Zach Braff).

PS: *LIFE* is "the comedy", I think that's the point of films like this. You gotta laugh at it otherwise you must cry. Sometimes. [cue R.E.M. "Everybody Hurts"...]

Chipping away at a mountain of pop culture trivia,
Darren Dirt.

reply

Hang in there, Darren. Synecdoche sent me into a 7 month long depression. The tide's finally turned, though. Give it time

Mike Leigh's Naked, Dark Horse

reply

I agree with those who recommended Naked, as well as the person who recommended Oslo, August 31st.
Two of my favorite movies, by the way (especially Naked).

The Weather Man.

Somewhere.

Made me feel the same way some Harmony Korine and Gus Van Sant (Elephant, Paranoid Park) movies do. That reminds me, I've got to see Gerry and Last Days. Haven't seen those yet.
