1960s Swedish jazz singer and entertainer Monica Zetterlund struggled to escape her small hometown, tried her luck and failed in New York City, only to find love and fame in Swedish showbiz by popularizing jazz in her own language. Through her problems with alcohol, her complex romances and her relationship with her bitter father, her phenomenal success left a trail of broken hearts and promises.
