Was this a documentary about Steadman or Johnny Depp?

I'm only halfway kidding. I know Depp didn't direct this but my goodness....there are a ton of shots of Depp smoking a ciggy or gazing wistfully, trying to act cool. It came off as a bit of a vanity project sometimes.

A shame, because Steadman deserved the full attention. Was a little silly to see Depp preening for the camera.

Yes! Absolutely right... thank you.

If you read reviews of this doc online, you'll also see lots of critics making the same observation. :)

You're obviously obsessed with Depp. I barely saw him in here.

Interesting. So I suppose the dozens of reviews of the film which point out Depp's constant presence....they're just all "off", right? The Guardian's review put it best, pointing out: "the waning presence of Johnny Depp, loitering between poor career choices to pull on a cigarillo and point at pictures"

I am not sure we saw the same movie.

Wow.

Do a little online research....it's clear that Depp's presence is a distraction for the film, in the eyes of critics....and certainly me.

I agree. Watching Johnny Depp posing and being a really cool guy can be very irritating. I also thought the excessive animation and bad music didn't help either. Ralph Steadman's work and his creative process alone would have made for a better film.

Indeed. Depp's a guy with integrity and all and he clearly has great admiration for Steadman, but he was careless with how "pally" he was with him, to the point of obvious distraction for the viewer. Also blame the director for including those shots.

Depp really wasn't in it that much and him being there didn't bother me at all, I liked to see them hanging out together and Depp clearly has an admiration for Steadman's work. This was definetely 100% about Steadman. I thought that it was a great documentary. animation, music and all.
