Congrats HBO: The Pope Resigns..

This documentary may have been the final straw for Ratzinger.. Could be leaders of the world forced his hand.. Hopefully the new Pope opens the files of inquisition.

I saw the news this morning and thought the exact same thing. I think Ratzinger wants to get the hell outta there before his papacy is questioned or his sainthood anointment is opposed due to his direct involvement of the secrecy revealed in this documentary and other revealing publications of late. The timing of his 'resignation' is certainly suspicious. I wouldn't be surprised if Ratzinger dies soon ... you know, quietly of natural causes *cough*. And I think he'll have to be dead before full exposure of his involvement of 'secrecy' is acknowledged and declared as fact by the Catholic Church, which I believe will happen at some point after his death but not before he is anointed a saint. Like Pope John Paul II, they are likely to saint Ratzinger immediately after his death.

I sure hope that right hand man of Maciel Maciel Degollado, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, doesn't get in. He's a real slime ball and he's next on the list for the papacy. In fact he was mentioned as the top replacement on the news this evening. If that guy gets in these cover ups are sure to continue.

I have to think ... Why wouldn't the Church just give in and have these pedophiles arrested and dealt with by the civil law of the communities they commit offenses in? Why do they feel inclined to cover up for them? Pedophilia is as old as the dawn of man, why do we think that priests are not inclined to that behavior just because they're priests? Heck, presidents break the law (insert name of president here), police break the law (insert name of the multitude of offenders here right??), sh*t - we had a grandma busted selling bath saltz in my area just last week ... pfft. The dark side can get ya' ... don't matter who you are or what title you posses.

I think the Catholic Church should let our community criminal systems deal with these offenders - throw their azzes in jail! Maybe that would be a deterrent as they would suffer prosecution from the public and penile institutions rather than be a file shuffled around the Vatican for 25yrs.

Now if only he'd do the "honorable" thing. The world would be a better place without this personification of evil.

I was wondering why the families and parents of these kids or the kids themselves (after they were grown)and some of the other priests seemed to keep going to their local Diocese or writing letters to the Vatican or trying to sue the Vatican. Why not just stop trying to get help from the Catholic church and go directly to law enforcement to stop these child molesters? It's the law that should be handling these predators, not the church. Apparently they are just going to do nothing. The hell with trying to get the church to make them pay. They should just be put in prison along with other pedophiles.

The police have their hands tied as the statute of limitations has expired on most if not all of the those crimes that happened decades ago. Unless it's a recent act - it is tough to prosecute for the reason of time limitations and witness's reluctance to testify, their victims acceptance of monetary (silent) compensation, and the lack of evidence. Even recent crimes are tough to prosecute as it is often one person's word against another with little to no physical evidence.

^^^Yeah, I always thought that the laws on this should be changed to do away with the statute of limitations. It's often when a victim becomes an adult that they fully grasp the abuse that happened to them as a child and are able to fight back and pursue justice. It shouldn't be denied them. I can see how trying to prove it with physical evidence would be difficult, if not impossible, but in cases such as the one with Father Murphy, the shear magnitude of abuse of so many kids could be fought in uniting as many victims as possible in pursuing legal action. If enough of them were able to get together in cases like that, the legal system would have to listen to all of them and take their accusations seriously. When I say that the legal system should be handling this, I mean that at the time the abuse is happening and other adults, such as other priests who made repeated complaints to their Diocese or to the Vatican, had shifted their focus from the church to their local law enforcement, maybe they could have stopped it without wasting time on a system that will do nothing about it. Child molesters are criminals no matter who they work for or where they choose to hide out and the law should be dealing with them. It's a shame that the Catholic church doesn't recognize that they are being used by these people to do their dirties and aren't even what could be considered a real priest.

I also thought the resignation could be linked to Cardinal Roger Mahoney of LA being relieved of his official duties by the Archbishop of LA because of the recent disclosures of documents as a result of the pedophile priests lawsuit settlement. Mahoney is screaming like a stuck pig and he may have said "boys, if I go down, you all do." According to an article in today's NY Times, Vatican experts believe there may be a rash of resignations in Rome. Instant Karma going get you.

I don't understand. I thought Ratzinger was one of the first Popes to be wanting to stop the pedophiles? Didn't they say that in this documentary? I only saw it once so maybe I misinterpreted something. I'll have to watch it again.

Yes, as pope, he has said he wanted to do something. But as pope, he is on record as saying that all this abuse was news to him. When in fact, as a cardinal, he was the guy receiving all the abuse information that the bishops were sending to the Vatican in earnest. And as a specially-appointed cardinal, he was supposed to be investigating every one of these priest. And he very well may have. But the Secretary of State of the Cardinals (and therefore the diplomatic face of the Vatican), this longstanding snake Sodano forbade him for pursuing anyone or even acknowledging the problem.

Sodano and others were clearly grooming Ratzinger for the papacy. Moreover Ratzinger most likely leveraged his way in with all the information at his disposal. Everything's shady.

Holy See insiders were well-aware of Ratzinger's position before his ascension to pontiff. His hypocrisy and inaction came to light only in the last couple of years after the lawsuit was filed and the New York Times started digging.

I am so glad I escaped this cult of idiocy a long time ago.

Yeah for a guy who said he wanted to address the issue as pope, he sure had no problem letting the same atrocious child rapers operate when he was cardinal.

He should be ashamed of himself to the point where he pitches himself off that stupid balcony from which he has spread lies and sold phony hope to the idiotic masses. There is a special place in Hell for all these clowns.

So before he was The Pope, he was The Pimp?

also an irish jesuit who was disgusted by the abuse leaked the written orders from card ratzinger instructing irish bishops to cover up & keep the abuse secret. he later asked irish church goers to give more noney to collections because of the compensation the church was paying
