I felt it was just a red herring, a ruse, to get Robbie into the house.
I doubt Katie ever went to the hospital at all, the ambulance etc......it was all done by the coven.

I agree. It was a red herring. A necessary one to the plot. Robbie needed to tell Alex that his mother had been taken to hospital.
