I finally accepted the truth about Vietnam

The bloody stalemate in Afghanistan and watching VIETNAM IN HD has made me take off my blinders and accept the historical truth, that the American government, its top political leaders, and top military leaders, blundered the war in Vietnam.

I accept now that my fellow Americans back in late 1968 to 1973 were right to protest the war, having been served up lie after lie about, "...victory is within reach...and...cautious optimism..." the same garbage been fed to Americans about Afghanistan now.

I used to despise the media for helping turn the American people against the Vietnam war and also for turning the Tet Offensive victory into a defeat through media bias. But watch VIETNAM IN HD from start to finish because it is chronological and you realize the great defensive victory of Tet wasn't the point at all. The media and the American people realized that they had been buffaloed all along about the NVA and Viet Cong on the verge of defeat and that the war was being won. The North Vietnamese sacrified the entire Viet Cong just to prove the American leaders were wrong, causing an immense, 'loss of face' for the American goverment. The American people woke up to the truth that victory was no where in sight. True, the Viet Cong were finally destroyed, but it was a blessing for the North Vietnamese Army who probably wanted the VC out of the way. The NVA was fully capable of picking up the fight and continuing.

Watching the battles of American marines and G.I.s being pushed to capture hill after hill, just to inflict enemy casualties and then retreat and give the hill back to the army would have military leaders like Caesar, Trajan, William, Genghis Khan, Washington, Napoleon, Wellington, Guderian, Rommel, Patton, all turning with disgust in their graves.

I agree with VIETNAM IN HD that the American people were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, nonetheless, to take out their anger and frustration on its citizen American soldiers, men who accepted their draft or else volunteered for military service. Perhaps that is why today's American people, clearly frustrated by events in Afghanistan, have still more or less respect for its military.

Afghanistan and Vietnam are nothing alike. May as well throw the Korean war into the mix, and claim all three are the same. You've managed to draw all the wrong conclusions.

reply

They're similar in regards to being guerilla warfare.

Si vis pacem parabellum!

Sure ... like a donkey cart and a Ferrari are similar in regards to having wheels.

Just like Afghanistan, we lost the war because we didn't fight to win. Fighting to win in Vietnam would've escalated to the direct involvwment of the USSR, and a hot war between the USSR and US.

The US only wins in all-out war scenarios. It's what we do best.

Unfortunately, the societal fallout from Vietnam destroyed American culture and trust of its government and leaders, and in many ways the country has never recovered.

Yeah, you win 100% of your all-out conflicts, that is, your track record is 1/1.
