Interesting Film, but am I the only one..

.. That thought there was an excessive amount of nudity and sex?

Especially the first scene which could have technically started at the attack.. the lesbian sex wasnt necessary. Too much sex not enough attention of practical effects. And it left me wanting a bit more..

Gonna watch it again because it's a two day rental

reply

Well yes there was a lot of nudity & sex but I wouldn't call it excessive because of the way its presented, its not like nudity you get in something like American Pie as it never really feel gratuitous.

So nudity is bad and not "necessary" but gratuitous violence and gore is fine?

reply

Actually hell no, I thought the scene where they killed lucio.. or whatever his name was, was extremely over the top, they could have killed him with just the throat slice.. they didnt have to rip it out, he still would have died. And if the sex and nudity made sense with the story I would think it was necessary but some of it was just overkill, I'm just saying, I dont think, the opening lesbian sex scene was needed. I dont see how it pertains to the story at all.

So I noticed you didn't mention the graphic scene of the mother and father fooling around in the car, just the two women ... interesting. Is it the fact that they're lesbians that bothers you? Because I doubt you would give a second glance to a hetero couple.

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

reply

YOU thought is was gratuitous?? It was purposeful. Obviously, the director felt it was necessary so maybe you should think about why they felt the need to include it? I thought the throat ripping out was awesome! It was MEANT to make you cringe. Obviously, you've spent some time after the movie thinking about it...that's exactly why they included it. They wanted it to stick with you. I feel like it was meant to show emotion - how deeply angry and hurt the mother was by what she believed had happened to her children. She wanted him to suffer. You must not be a horror fan....and in that case...why are you watching this kind of flick?? The horror genre is filled with sex and gore...if you don't like those things then...you probably will dislike a lot of horror flicks.

Not the only one, but one of few.

And if nudity (the most natural thing in the world) bothers you so much, stick with Disney films.

I thinkthe director (and most of the people that enjoyed this movie) would disagree with you. I felt the nudity/sex really tied in well. I hve seen some over the top sex scenes and the scenes in this movie don't qualify at all. Especially simply because it was two women in the one scene you mentioned.

reply

OP: I get what you're saying. Unfortunately, there are a lot of angry people in the world, and some of them come to imdb to call others "prudes," "racists," "haters," etc., etc... Says more about them than anything else.

For me personally, the only sex scene that really had no bearing on the film was the opening scene between the two women. I thought it was pretty hot, but also completely unrelated to the story.

It might not help but in another thread here there's an interview with the director and here's one of the questions/answers:

For my last question, let me ask about the opening scene, which starts with a bang in every imaginable sense that echoes throughout the film. While I wouldn’t want to spoil it, was that a starting point or did you work backwards towards it?

Yeah, I came with that idea initially. I love that scene. I think that a lot of people misunderstand that scene, which is great because I love films that have different interpretations. For many years, I had that scene in my mind. It’s an homage to an Italian movie that I love called “Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave [Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key]” and I always thought that to open a movie with a couple having sex. In this case, I thought that was great because that’s what the film is about. It’s not about horror. It’s not about supernatural elements. It’s about sex and sexual repression. And I thought it was a great way to make a statement. The scene links to a lot of things that happen in the movie, but it’s in such a subtle way that not many people get it, but I was convinced that it was a very strong way to get the attention of the audience and make them wonder what the hell is going on.”

Whoop dat trick!

That actually helps a lot! thank you.. I definitely got that the movie had different layers of sexual meaning but I did not piece together why the lesbian sex was necessary.. thanks again!!!!

reply

Why are you so worried about the "lesbian sex"? There was more sexuality in the movie beyond that one scene. You must be one of the sexually repressed the director was talking about.

reply

In my opinion it was all well balanced, tastefully presented and thematically necessary.

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

Didn't seem excessive to me at all to be honest. It's an unrated foreign horror film, nothing seemed over the top, considering

I was disappointed we didn't get to see the kids getting it on some more.
