Sequel to The Housemaid?

Was this really supposed to be a prequel to The Housemaid?

The female lead recalls a moment when her childhood nanny set herself on fire...

However, if I remember right, there's actually a moment where the characters in The Taste of Money are *watching* The Housemaid in their private movie theater. Don't tell me that was supposed to be them watching 'home movies'? It was actual footage from the film...

Sequel - the daughter in "the taste of money" makes a mention of the maid who set herself on fire.

And them watching the film in the movie theatre is just....a weird homage I think...would have been a little awkward if Yoon Yeo-jeong turned up on the screen with her watching herself....but thankfully that doesn't happen..!

Yes, they did mentioned about a maid burning herself and watching the "Housemaid" film on their home theater but other than these two, I can't find anything else relevant to call "The Taste of Money" the sequel of "The Housemaid". It is just that both movies were made by the same director, Sang Soon Im.

Nami (the female lead) is definitely Nami (little girl) from The Housemaid. The Taste of Money is supposed to show that the housemaid's suicide did leave an impact after all.

In the end of The Housemaid, we aren't sure if her death has saved Nami from being morally corrupted like her parents and grandmother are. In The Taste of Money, it's slowly revealed that it has.

Also, the father talks about repentance for letting so many girls down. It's no coincidence that he chose the kind housemaid, Eva, in which to make up for his past misdeeds.

reply

Yea but the rest of the family doesn't add up. I don't remember a grandfather. This is a half-assed sequel at best.

Just in-jokes I think. Not a great movie but passed 2 hours not unpleasantly.

A sequel it does not have to be just because one spots parallels to this other movie. Indeed a director may wish to nod to his previous work without making the latter s sequel. The franchising of a movie (lets hope) is a temporary and more American aspect of cinema. In any event, there are and have been practices of gangster movies made by one director that (using clips from an older gangster flick) nods to the older one. In closing, I do not know if this is a sequel or not, however I do wish to rebuke the suggestion that it is simply because of the clip shown in the home theater.

Both films also star the old lady, the one hiring the house maid.

According to the director:

It is the spiritual sequel of the housemaid, the director calls it "an extension of The Housemaid. You can say that it’s the story of the children of The Housemaid who've grown up."
