Question About the Ending [SPOILERS]

Overall, I enjoyed Mobius. It was a bit obscure in places, with a convoluted plot, but the acting was strong, and it's a very stylish film.

The ending was bittersweet indeed. Alice is brain-damaged, a shell of her former self, but perhaps there is a spark of hope at the last moment when she breaks through the mental fog and recognizes Moise.

However, I didn't understand how Moise ended up at the hospital where Alice was a patient. Wasn't he about to be arrested for treason in Russia? How did he get to a hospital in Brussels without being stopped? Did he walk out of his office straight to the airport? And then what happened to him?

It is interesting that, when he gets to the hospital, he is let through by the CIA guards simply by explaining his identity. I wondered if we were supposed to figure that he had used his erstwhile CIA handlers to get asylum. They don't seem particularly surprised to see him.

I'm sentimental enough to hope that they can be together, Moise caring for the woman he obviously still loves. It's hard to figure out how that could happen with him being wanted for treason in Russia; the FSB would certainly find a way to get to him unless he's under the protection of some other security service (French? American?).

This is not a complaint, by the way. I don't need every little loose end tied up, but I liked the character and wish we had been given a bit more to work with in figuring out his fate.

CIA was under the impression that Moise was working for them as a double agent. Hence, Moise asked them, "as part of the deal", to let him visit Alice in the hospital. Because, after all, he was "their man".

Of course, he was in fact a triple agent. He was still serving FSB and him being "found, chased, and punished" by FSB was only part of a future cover-up against CIA, so that all the BS that FSB fed CIA over years can still pass as valid intel.

So, Moise had no real reason to be worried about FSB, since all his moves were pre-approved by them. He was also not worried about CIA, because they thought he was their agent.

You know that your triple agent comment is perfect reasoning for the film's title? Mobius, as in 'Mobius strip'?

Je ne penses pas.
Donc ne suis-je?
