Anyone else like this better than V.H.S. 2?

I can understand where the haters are coming from, just from the "shaky cam" thing alone.

Regardless, I really liked it as far as horror anthologies go. In fact, every single complaint for V.H.S. can be thrown at the original TALES FROM THE CRYPT, VAULT OF HORROR and HEAVY METAL. In the end, the wrap around is just an excuse to justify showing a handful of short stories. Whether those stories are any good... well that is the question.

Even so, I think what I liked about this over the sequel was how small and contained the stories were especially the 2nd one.. yeesh, you could see that on DEADLY WOMEN or any of those Investigative Discovery shows), like stories told around a campfire. The second one had the zombie biker segment (which I liked the best) and the death cult, both of which implied that the "end of the world" was transpiring. The problem is that the rest of the movie completely forgets about it (not to mention that stupid jokey end shot with the zombied kid from the 1st film).

I also found it interesting that it seemed that V.H.S. 2 re-purposed the stories from the 1st film as well: you had the cult episode (the haunted house compared to the asian death cult); you had the glimpse of ghosts episode (the "Emily's baby" story compared to the mechanical eye story); you had the more fun/goofy episodes with the FRIDAY THE 13th riff and the zombie biker and you had the demon/succubbus episode versus the alien abduction one.

In the end, V.H.S., like a good campfire story or a good haunted house, served it's purpose well (to give me a good jump, or creep me out a bit), at least for myself.

I enjoyed V/H/S better then number 2,Im really shocked that this movie only has a 5.7 rating. The Wrap around was slightly weak but it gave it a gritty feel and didn't take much away from it. Of course i loved "Amateur Night" like everyone else and i agree with you about the second story where that could of been real life. (funny story i saw a happy couple getting their fortune told by one of those robot gypsy things last month and the first thing i thought was "oh no! dude your gonna get a knife to the neck!!")
"Emily" was really good too..i felt it was a different kind of creepy story that hasn't really been explored before. It felt lightweight original.
I hated the one with the kids in the woods and thought that could have been removed.
Honestly If they would have replaced the woods story with the "Safe Haven" story (the death cult) then V/H/S would have been completely epic.

This was a LOT better than 2. 2 looked like an awful horror movie that could have easily been shot in non found footage style. so over the top, that demon birth lol laughably bad.

In all fairness to Safe Haven, it was amazing (great impending doom atmosphere) until it became a video game and then don't even talk to me about that comical ending. In fact, all of VHS 2 was comical to me, with exception to Clinical Trials, which I thought would have fit perfectly in VHS 1.

YES. I only liked the electronic eye story (the 1st one) and Safe Haven from VHS2. I found VHS to be far scarier/creepier than VHS 2.

Much.

I much preferred V/H/S, because the sequel, while decent, just seemed a bit over the top. The aliens, the eye, the cult, etc. were all creepy, but not necessarily in a compelling way. I don't know, perhaps my horror preferences are inexplicable. All I know that V/H/S really stuck with me, something that I can't say is true of the sequel.

I actually like the 3rd one the best.
