1. The sick thing that happened...
Although I hated the twist and the Skype stuff didn't make sense in a movie caled VHS.

2. Second Honeymoon
Like the editing towards the end, and the abrupt punchline - could have used more of these type of endings in there.

3. Haunted House
The effects weren't that bad, glad they didn't go with the stupid alternate ending.

4. amateur night
Meh!

5. glitchman
Never go into Blair Witch territory, ITS BEEN DONE.

6. tape 56
Real bad prologue with an ending you SAW from miles away.

I'm not sure which is which but, my top two would be the bat-girl story and that haunted house story with the dude in the bear suit. Those were my favorites.

Spoilers...

1. "Amateur Night". Hands down winner for me; the first half before the blood and guts started actually got to me a little. Especially when they're in the club and she first started showing an interest in the camera guy... unnerving. Descended into silliness by the end, but a good start.

2. "10/31/98". Good fun and simple, though not at all scary. The fact that the protagonists were actually kinda likeable made a hell of a difference - these were the only guys in the film who I wanted to see survive.

3. "The Sick Thing That Happened To Emily When She Was Younger". Again a good start, but the needlessly complex twist really turned me off. A real shame. Interesting at best for me.

4. "Second Honeymoon". I'm surprised this segment gets so much love, I thought it dragged a bit. (SPOILER) When the camera gets turned on the middle of the night I straight away thought it would be a third party, and I just didn't understand the main female character's motivation. Did she really need to be such a bitch? Could she not have just divorced the dude? Was that really necessary?

5. "Tape 56". Entirely predictable, and constrained by being the framing device. Would have benefitted from one at least mildly sympathetic character.

6. "Tuesday the 17th". Egads, this was dire. Team digital killer! Though the cheerleader kill was at least kinda anusing.

If Matrix was here, he'd laugh too.

Sorry to respond to you instead of the OP, I just don't know the individual stories by their names so I decided to respond to you so I could use your detailed post to help me keep them all straight lol...

This movie was great. There were things about it I didn't like, I get most of the complaints, but for me personally it worked and it worked very well. I think the reason is because it's not supernatural things that get me-witches, vampires, ghosts, poltergeists or what have you are just simple entertainment and nothing more. The idea is silly and I never think about it again once the movie is over.

It's the unexpected things that can happen in real life that are horrific that I relate to the most. I have had silly "nightmares" about stuff involving supernatural elements before that I've woken up from, shrugged off, and fell back to sleep with no problem. But one recurring nightmare kept me awake the rest of the night and had me in tears, and that was when my son started school. He was so excited to ride the big boy bus (it was a few years before he realized the bus wasn't all that great lol and he became a car rider). Clearly I was very anxious about the changes and putting him in other hands besides my own, because I started having nightmares about what would began as a perfectly normal morning, mimicking an actual real life morning in our house every week day, of the typical routine involving getting him ready for school. He'd wake up, eat, get dressed, brush teeth, etc. The bus would come and he'd get on. I'd stand there and wave as they pulled away and idly watch as the bus went down the street before turning away and going back to the house. Except in my nightmare, while I was watching the bus go down the street it would suddenly out of nowhere explode. Now THAT freaked my shít.

For this reason, the second honeymoon was the one that really got to me. I can't tell you how many hours of footage we have of vacations that had such similar sights and sounds. I kept putting myself in their place and thinking about how completely freaked out I'd be if one time we came home from a vaca and were watching our tapes and saw...ourselves at night sleeping and totally unaware and vulnerable. How shocked and creeped out we'd be. It really seriously got to me. The twist was okay, but the moment it was revealed that neither of them were holding the camera shook me up badly. 8

I like the Halloween one too, nice set up and the payoff was cool. Just another ghost leading several people to their deaths story but well done. Felt really bad for the guys who thought they were doing the right thing by saving the girl. That was fùcked up. 8

Amateur night was mildly amusing but I gotta tell you, there was zero sympathy for the drunk fùcks deciding it was such a cool idea to fùck a girl they clearly thought was a little touched in the head. The guy she "liked" so much had a shred of decency (which is maybe why she liked him? But then again if she could only feed during sex why choose the one guy who might not do it since he had a brain and some principles?) and I was rooting for him but his friends? Nah. I'd have thought that was the whole point of that story if she hadn't gotten him in the end. Then again, they didn't actually show his death? I dunno, I got a little confused. Had she let him live I'd have liked the story a little more. As it was I was just mostly disgusted by the frat boy and obviously morality lacking behavior. Not to be preachy, I was just annoyed most of the time, lol.6

The one in the woods was meh, I read some criticisms of it on other posts and agreed with them. I kept wondering when she set up traps and why she didn't get killed doing it. If there was some caveat like in Jeepers Creepers where he could only kill during certain times they didn't exactly make it clear. I can gloss over a lot of things but sometimes they just stand out so much it takes you out of the story. This was one of those for me. 5.5

The sick thing that happened to Emily was alright. The utter betrayal by the dude left me appropriately cold and feeling just awful for her. Liked the scares of the little kid closing the door and showing up suddenly when the light shined on it and aliens were not what I was expecting, but I wish he'd talked to them more. I dunno, aliens are t really my thing. Overall I did like it though. 7

As for the rest of it, I loved the very subtle way they showed the dead guy in the chair and then at some point when the dude put another tape in...he just wasn't there anymore. I liked that they didn't have the dude turn around, notice, and freak out. I like how it was done. Also the scene in the basement with the glimpse of what looked like a naked guy running across his field of vision was fine. It's happened a thousand times but it fit and wasn't overdone. The other dude's mustache was priceless. Lol. 6.5

I agree with the majority that Amateur Night is by far the best, and 10/31/98 was easily the second best.

As for the rest, eh. I actually liked Tape 56 well enough, the setting was creepy.

Tuesday and Sick Thing had some gross moments but were otherwise unremarkable.

Second Honeymoon would be my least favorite. Which is surprising because I utterly adore Ti, but he's a director that really thrives in and has mastered the intricacies of traditional filmmaking, found footage lacks all of the things he's truly great at. There's no shame in that, most great found footage directors are mediocre at traditional films as well.

Put it like this... if it wasn't for Amateur Night being the first segment, there's a chance a lot of people wouldn't of made it through the entire movie. Cause the rest of the segments... went downhill from there.

Perhaps i was missing something, but Second Honeymoon... if my wife and I are in a hotel, and she is wearing a thong... there's something wrong with my marriage if we aren't sleeping in the same bed. Tape 56 wasn't bad, just didn't care for the ending. Tuesday the 17th was the worst in my opinion. Yeah, i'm going to sacrifice my friends and boyfriend, just for revenge.

She didn't have a bf in Tuesday the 17th. They were ALL just friends.
