Sequel far superior the original

I got VHS 2 from a Red Box last year (while I was quite drunk) and did not know anything about it or what it was. My friend and I watched it immediately thereafter, and wow, I was completely impressed. It was the first truly frightening film I had seen in years and the only movie that kept me awake at night since I was a kid. I just finished watching the first one, and I am very disappointed. All of the characters were just stock characters, none of them really had unique characteristics so I didn't empathize with any of them, the characters reacted to events in ways that no rational person would (the guys in the Halloween party segment for example), the segments had way too much filler (I understand that they need buildup, but, for example, "Second Honeymoon" could have been cut to the half the time without diminishing its impact), and the plots were either predictable or forgettable. The movie's effects and shocking moments were well done and "Amateur Night" was excellent, but everything else was predictable, unlike VHS 2 where every segment was memorable and you cared about what happened to the characters despite them not having much screen time for development. Anyone else agree?

Although i have seen these in the order they came out. I showed my friend part two first.( He loved it. ) A week later i showed him part 1, he thought the exact same way as you do. But i also think 2 was better.

I have a feeling that if Safe Heaven segment from 2 was removed people wouldn't like 2 as much.

I agree. I thought the first one was more fun and offbeat. The second one, Safe Have was really good, the zombie one was good, and the other two seemed perfunctory.

Not at all. They bungled the premise of the movie, presenting HD video as if it was on VHS. All the segments in 2 are generic as all get out. Safe Haven was the only interesting one. The rest were just a march through overdone garbage you can see anywhere else. Zombies, aliens, ghosts. YAWN.

The first actually looked like footage shot on tape and had far more interesting premises. That people like 2 better just goes to show that mediocrity and safety sell.

how can VHS2 be better? it wasnt even shot using VHS cameras, which was most of the appeal to the first movie. even when they did use digital camreas in the first movie, they still felt really lo-fi and authentic. safe night is the only segment from VHS2 that is actually good. the zombie go-pro one from VHS2 was fun, but completely felt inauthentic and how the fuck is go pro footage on a VHS tape? should've called the movie something else if it's not about VHSs

I agree. Wasn't a big fan of this one, but two was a lot more fun.
