Maurice

I found Maurice to be the most interesting of the apes, and predict that eventually would do something similar to what The Lawgiver did in the original POTA films.

His character was quite interesting

Maurice was just a briliantly conceived character. His personality and the way he was animated really brought life to the overall character. In his early exchange with Caesar about "no sign of humans in last 2 winters", the animation was incredible with so much subtlety. I watched that scene a few times and was amazed every time.

The animation/mo cap acting in this film is amazing. The difference between Koba's gesture of deference, next false deference used to trick humans, and finally suppressed rage was so brilliantly acted in all 3 of the instances where he used it that in one gesture, the mo cap actor communicated the equivalent of a dramatic speech.

Was his name an homage to Maurice Evans (who played the original Dr. Zais?)

reply

That was my immediate thought when I heard the name.

The coolest thing about Maurice was the noise he made!

I liked him too. I hope they have big plans for him in sequel(s. He could work as a messenger or something between human and apes.

Personally, I want to see Maurice and the gorillas talk more.

Get off your soapbox while I play you a tune on the tiniest violin.

Definitely a fascinating character. He's so gentle in almost all of his appearances, the one time when he does bare his teeth and snarl it's all the more jarring.
