Oz the grest and powerful

Its odd that this type of film gets released this early in the year. Without having seen it yet, I question the quality of this film by the fact they are releasing it at a time where they have little chance to be relevant during award season. OZ is family fare, so its timing is great to coincide with school vacations, Emperor has no such advantage.

Looking at the experience of the director and screenwriters I suspect a lack of confidence from the studio, which drove down the budget, and thus release time was probably not by choice but by economic reality.

I have seen a clip and the dialog was kind of iffy, but that might change if I saw more of the context. Nonetheless, as interesting as it seems, unless directed otherwise I am going to wait for Emperor on DVD/Blueray. OZ on the other hand I will see next weekend.

Films are released according to the way the Film company feels will maximize it's profits. If they feel it's going to be a blockbuster they are released in Early Summer or the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. If they don't then they look at other releases and dates and pick accordingly.

Historical dramas tend to be put out in the fall/early winter because an award season win means maximum profits.Blockbusters usually do not need award season (because they usually only win technical awards anyway) so they are released in the Summer season when more of the general public go to the movies. This movie was put out in the dead season for historical dramas, which usually means that the studio does not have a lot of confidence in it, and they would only be burning money trying to hold on to it.
