I liked it

Being a history nut, I love movies like this. PROVIDED they are accurate.

The love story didn't need to be a part of the movie, maybe just a little to explain why he spoke Japanese and liked the culture so much, but she didn't need to be in 1/3 of the scenes.

However, I wanted to learn more about why Hirohito didn't hang. I am (was) of the camp that he should have been, being overall ruler and "god" of the country.
However, I did learn something new. The Kyujo Incident was not known to me. This makes the movie overall a giant success. By the end of the movie, I would like to think I would have spared the Emperor as well. The coup proved that even the Japanese didn't really consider him a god (at least not those in power) and he had to go along or else it would be his neck. I had no sympathy for him before I saw this movie. I then researched it more to make sure it is accurate.

Is it a good movie, no. Is it worth watching, yes. This part of US history (45-50) is not mentioned much in USA history class. And this movie helped to solve some of this.

I know we will never know the whole history of what happened, but I would like to know if he really said that to MacArthur in English as it was portrayed.

Yes. My uncle was on General McArthur's command staff, and the Emperor did indeed ask that he be punished, and not his people. General McArthur was not expecting that from the emperor when they met.
