So what's the protagonist's background?

Where did she learn her kickbutt abilities, which she'll be using to rescue her husband?

reply

I hope the movie makes that a part of the story. For example maybe early in the movie she wins some kind of MMA competition (for her gender and weight division obviously, she could not realistically beat Ken Shamrock) and her husband congratulates her and maybe they use some of the prize money to finance their vacation.

You know this movie might be COOL for one big reason, in almost all thrillers where someone is kidnapped it is the WIFE that is kidnapped and the HUSBAND who rescues her (think Liam neeson) but damn are female protagonists who can really kick ass rare.

"female protagonists who can really kick ass [are] rare."

Yeah, there's a reason for that. If one existed, she could write her own check. Sadly, one does not exist.

Obviously you're never watched women fighters in Hong Kong action films---check out the recent films CHOCOLATE(2008) with Jeeja Yanin, and NINJA MASTERS aka COWEB (2009) with Jiang Luxia--both real-life female martial artists whooping a** in both films.

Here's Yanin (she's in Tony Jaa's new flick,BTW):

And here's Jiang Luxia in COWEB:

Here's old-school Kong Kong action sensation (and real-life martial artist) Yukari Oshima, who was worth seeing in just about everything, no matter how lame the film was. Here's a scene form one of her best showcases, and it is truly bada**:

And last, but not least, Cynthia Rothrock (her H.K. films were way better than her U.S. ones):

Check 'e all out--they're fun!

It's explained in the movie, she has a abusive past history.

RIGHT?! I am beyond excited to see things turned around! I know this is probably annoying, but I'm glad movies like The Hunger Games is turning things around. It's still a love story and the females are still fighting for a man, but they're not the damsels in distress anymore and I LOVE that!

reply

Actually they do. She had an abusive guy in her past. He seemed to be some sort of survivalist nut who was constantly on about how she needed to be ready to defend herself. To this end he'd frequently have "training" sessions which were basically him beating her up until she learned to fight back.

It was one of the more interesting aspects of the film to me, because what he did was clearly wrong, but at the same time it did actually prepare her for the situation she found herself in.

reply

Oh! That was her Dad!!

reply

Did you even watch the movie? It was shown A LOT that her dad trained her since she was young not to take *beep* from anyone.

reply

Undo the calamity that is your mammaries. Really read the posts and you would notice that they haven't, in fact, seen the movie, possibly just the trailer.

I hope the movie makes that a part of the story.

reply

this is the prequel to her character in the FAST movie

reply

Her father (a Criminal) trained her, told her that she could never trust anyone to help her and sometimes not even herself. He beat her all the time, surprised attacked her whenever he thought the time was right he explained that in life if someone want to put you down to the ground you take him out. To survive you must be willing to go further than your enemy. So I guess her background is explained quit well actually. The way I see it anyone and everyone that I know that has had that type of upbringing can fight.
