Mary Cullen replaced by a character named Rebecca

I was so excited when I heard that one of my favorite books was turned into a movie...until I came to IMDb and saw that the cast list doesn't mention Mary Cullen. I thought maybe it was a mistake and went to the producer's homepage which states that a character named Rebecca will be Rob's love interest

Seriously?
I understand that changes have to me made.
Or that one character represents several other characters.
But omitting not only a main character but the wife of the main character?
WTH!

It's ridiculous. Mary is as much a part of Rob J. as the "gift". Tom Payne is too puny to play Rob. J. Guess we will have to resign to seeing our beloved book remade into something quite not right.

It does seem like this movie will be dissapointment...

I liked the movie, haven't read the book. What is the importance of the character of Mary Cullen?

reply

Came here for the same thing. Won't be seeing it anymore. Apparently they needed a love interest that was constantly around in order to make the story work. Losers.

It would've been great to see Mary and her father in the film. It would've made it alot better and also added to Rob's religious conflicht.

Does anyone know where Rebecca is from or what her ethnicity is in this film?

reply

she is jew and came from Spain, so probably of the Sefardite people.
