First World problems?

I flagged this movie to watch, as it's Malick, and Bale, and Portman, and the subject matter is Hollywood, and the main character is a successful screenwriter. These are all things that attract me to it. Even watching the trailer, I was intrigued and excited to see the artfulness of despair captured by a master. However, in the back of my mind, I also wondered, what is this all about? What's it all for? A study in decadence, but we've seen it before. I wonder, am I going to be any better off for watching a rich man struggle with all the pleasures the world has to offer? How should I feel when over half of the world's people live in poverty or worse? It's just another distraction to make me feel better about myself when the lights come up. I'm not sure I'm interested anymore.

I like TM, but this movie seems extraordinarily pointless. I watched the trailer and then I read the first note of trivia: No script, only improv... #pretensemaxed

The nuance and beauty in TOL was the reflection of the audience's lives in the characters and the raw human experiences there in, but this seems very esoteric and accessible to very few folks...
