A Pleasant surprise

I really enjoyed this film. I had read some posotive and negative reviews and, while the film is not perfect, I loved it. Sure the ending cound have been better but the relationship of beatrice and victor was fascinating. Not to mention, the action scenes were great. Anybody have any thoughts on the film?

reply

I agree. I thought it was really solid. Especially the second half.

I absolutely loved it. I admit the script offered up some cheesiness at times, but I still really enjoyed it. But I must say, my theater was quite full and I didn't get the vibe that many people enjoyed it like I did. There were quite a few obnoxious people laughing at the movie throughout.

I must say though that, critical ratings aside, the audience reaction reminded me of when I saw Killing Them Softly: in fact, for KTS, there were fewer people in the theater and some walked out, while others were much more vocal about their displeasure.

I'm not trying to relate these two films: I'm just illustrating the kind of moviegoers I have to contend with.

I completely understand you it was a great film but i could tell some of the audience wasn't into it as I was. I'm very fond that some people liked it, i'll definitly be picking this up for blu-ray.Also,Killing Them Softly is a good film too.

That comment sold me on going to check this out. Killing Them Softly was brilliant so your good taste is established. Thanks picazop.

I agree with piczapop, this movie is really great. Rapace and Farrell were both excellent and had great chemistry. Also, Isabelle Huppert makes a surprise appearance and is excellent per usual.

It has been a week now, and there aren't any new releases I want to see (and Stoker and Spring Breakers haven't been released in my area yet), and I'm kind of itching to see Dead Man Down again. The totally unique vibe/feel/atmosphere to the movie has kept me thinking about it.

did you ever notice that people get a lot more angry when they plop down $10 or more to see a movie at the theater, than when you red-box a movie, or like me get your movies from the library for free!! a lot less disapointiment when you see a movie that you don't really like. it is all in the expectations.

reply

Yeah this was a great movie. I knew (without reading the book) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo would be a great movie and so was this.
AWESOME ENDING!!!

I saw the film today and surprised how good it was.

I saw this movie simply because I was craving popcorn. I recieved a pleasant surprise as well.

Wow, there are way cheaper ways to satisfy a popcorn craving! Those prices!!!!

I was suprised as well! It started off kind of fast with her demanding he kill the man for her right off the start, then felt like it was super slow until we finally find out who he is. Definately a cool little crime movie!

I really loved it. I got to the part where Colin Farrell started wreaking havoc with the revenge plot and couldn't believe how good the movie was. Maybe, some just aren't used to that Dragon Tattoo style. For those expecting to just see a guy throw zingers and wisecracks after each action clip, that's not their cup of tea. I like how the story was told--it's not just a series of action set pieces stitched together by some dialogue.

I'm liking the word of mouth that this film is getting. Maybe more people will check it out.

I agree with you TJenkins602. Hopefully, more people go to see this movie. It was a solid and enjoyable thriller. If anything,I think a second viewing will make this film even better.

The story was surprisingly simple and not very complex and the payoff was pretty fantastic. I think Hollywood would do a little bit well to keep things simpler in films to make them more enjoyable overall.

I also thought the ending was amusing.

Oplev has established himself as one of my favorite up and coming directors. I hope he is able to make more films on this side of the pond.

reply

Ok, that's absurd!

The story(s) is actually quite complex, intertwining a number of different stories together, so not really sure how anyone could come out saying that?

And the ending was amusing?

You sure you saw Dead Man Down?

I'm smelling plants all over this thread, or people who don't see a lot of films.

It's a good film, but nothing much more than that.

The beginning was quite awkward with Beatrice being completely overwhelming. I thought from that scene things might not go well, but the rest of the film felt right.

Probably could have used a little more action, as that first scene with the 2 of them the action that existed felt forced.

Giving your review or opinion means trying to be critical and weighing what you've against other pieces of work.

This film falls somewhere in the middle.

i just saw this and thought it was really good.i never listen to the critics because they are too hard at times and expect every film to be perfect.
the atmosphere and intensity are great and gripping.the relationship between two broken people is well written and im glad it isnt your typical revenge action flick.

as the sun sets slowly in the west i bid you a fond farewell

reply

i think you described it very well. its that core relationship that is really what got me hooked on this film.

the action scenes - i have seen them a hundred times. they are like cookie cutter "action move in a box" stuff. fast cut every 2 seconds so nobody can tell what the hell is going on, add really loud noises, rinse repeat. the ridiculous level is very high as well - oh im trying to hide what im doing being a sniper. now lets throw a guy out the window dangling from an electrical cord and then climb out myself and shoot another guy in the face in the view of thousands of people in daylight, most of whom have cellphone cameras now . well *beep* it, there are no cops here, they must be all to busy on the set of Olympus has Fallen . . honestly i thought it was the weak point, especially in the last ten minutes.
