I've watched HxH 15 years ago when it was fresh just up to the Yorktown Arc with the Spiders, that was the best part of HxH when it still had the mystery and everything was still decent and not overly convoluted. . . Chimera Ants Arc was too draggy, too many unnecessary scenes and characters, then they introduced a stupid and Overly Powered antagonist. . . . . .

That could only be defeated by a Nuclear Bomb. That goes against the spirit of the first Arcs where they need to battle with their own skills. There was a little glimmer of hope when Gon suddenly became SSJX something, though it wasn't clear how he did it, probably with a contract with himself in exchange for his life, but then he only used the power to defeat Neferpitou, though Pitou said he was as strong as Meruem. . . the clash didn't happen, instead Meruem dies to Radiation Poisoning.

Pretty dumb ending for an Arc if you ask me, then came The 13th Chairman Election Arc. . . this is where HxH fell from grace from being one of the top animes in my List. . . the mystery of Ging Freecs was completely and utterly removed just like that, Gon didn't have to search for him anymore. . . the power that saved Gon was complete BS, (Alluka Deux Machina), author must have ran out of great ideas by this Arc, and don't get me started on the Dark Continent Arc, I was facepalming on that one.

All in all HxH was a good series, only upto the Yorktown Arc with the Spiders, the author should have concluded his story lines with each Arc, not let them keep dragging on for so long. The author tries to put so much mystery into his characters like Hisoka that it ends up being uninteresting as the story drags on without a near ending in sight. So yeah, HxH was good at the start, then it became ridiculous and then it's on hiatus again for who knows how long, maybe another 15 years :P

^ Pretty much this although I enjoyed the 13th chairman more than dadi.

The pacing of HxH is excruciating during the ants arc in particular and your patience goes largely unrewarded at the end of it.

While slow-burn storytelling has its appeal, HxH never lets up on it's didacticism which eventually wears thin. Less episode-long discussions of impossible logic chains and more actual character/story development and it would be one of the all time greats.

Never tell me the odds.
